 Guide to Lancashire Local Studies Collections - accrington
Most of the earlier directories are of the county of Lancashire but the collection also includes the Accrington sections photocopied from some of the county directories which are not in our own stock.
The registers of the Sacred Heart Church, Accrington, are on microfilm for 1852 – 1940 but are in course of transcription and some bound printed volumes of this are available, as is the Confirmation register 1887-1940.
The main repository of archives for the county is held at the Lancashire Record Office.

 The Accrington Pals
The Accrington Pals is probably the best remembered of the battalions raised in the early months of the First World War in response to Kitchener's call for a volunteer army.
A month after the outbreak of war, the Accrington Observer and Times of 8th September 1914 reported that the War Office had accepted an offer made by the mayor of Accrington, Captain John Harwood, to raise a complete battalion.
On reading the pages of the Accrington Observer and Times for the months of July and August 1916, the impact the disaster had on the town is all too clear.

Accrington F.C. was formed in Accrington (now part of Hyndburn, Lancashire), following a meeting at a local public house in 1876.
Following the collapse of the club a new Accrington team did not join the league until in 1921-22 the Lancashire Combination league's Accrington Stanley F.C., which was originally a local rival, joined in.

  Accrington Cricket Club
In 1861, Gideon Holgate, Accrington's star batsman and wicketkeeper of the time, who also played for both Lancashire and Yorkshire, was rewarded with a new bat donated by the Club President for any player scoring 40 runs in an innings, for scoring 76 in the defeat of Burnley.
Accrington in the 1860s and 1870s had some delightfully named players such as Gideon Holgate, Ormerod Swarbrick, Cornelius Hargreaves and Hannibal Ramsbottom who was described as 'our far famed slow twist bowler,' James Sutcliffe, founder of the Lancashire League, also played for the club in this period.
During their tenure on the ground, Accrington were of course one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888.

Without wishing to be over-pedantic I should point out that Accrington FC, who were one of the original 12 members of the Football League in 1888, was not the same club as Accrington Stanley.
Accrington Stanley were not as many believe founder members of the Football League.
The formation details of Accrington Stanley are sketchy, but it is believed that the club was formed as Stanley Villa in 1891, so named because the originators lived on Stanley Street.

In 1881 the family are at 4 Water St, Accrington, in 1891 at 7 Water St, Accrington, and in 1901 21 Manor St, Accrington, though John ATTWELL is not on the census as he is away in the Army.

The name Accrington Stanley is over a hundred years old and many people make the mistake of refering to the team as the founder members of the Football League.
The current Accrington Stanley was formed in 1968 and, despite a series of ups and downs, they have managed to retain a band of enthusiastic supporters determined to preserve the existence of the town's football club.
A meeting held at Bold Street Working-Mens Club in 1968 gave birth to the new Accrington Stanley and their manager, Jimmy Hinksman, put together a team to play in the Lancashire Combination League at a ground known as Altham Playing Fields (later to become Crown Ground).
