Frehley (who showed up wearing one red sneaker and one orange sneaker) was less then impressive visually, but the band liked what they heard from his playing.
Frehley's spiky, lickety-split guitar style was influenced by Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, but he's just as familiar for his visual effects, such as the smoke bomb hidden in his guitar pickup, sparks and rockets fired off from his guitar head, and others.
Ace Frehley's use of alcohol and drugs increased due to his ever-increasing unhappiness in the band, and, by 1982, exited Kiss himself.

Actually, listening to Ace Frehley’s Greatest Hits Live is a trip through the ages and essentially serves as fitting encapsulation of all that the guitarist has ever been in the setting that defined him most.
Frehley may not be a technical virtuoso along the lines of a Malmsteen or a Vai, but in certain ways, he may have more attitude and soul than both of them put together.
Ace’s time with Frehley’s Comet is also represented here as well with most of the material coming from the first record--the only problem is that the best song on the debut disc entitled, “Into The Night” isn’t one of the tracks played here.

Ace Frehley's 1978 Kiss solo album is often rightfully considered the best of the bunch.
Ace was just gaining confidence in his songwriting and singing at the time, so it served as a much-needed showcase to prove that he was as integral to Kiss as the band's main songwriters, Stanley and Gene Simmons.
Ace's album was the only one of the four to spawn a true hit single, the funky rocker "New York Groove," while the rest of the album is a consistent set of guitar-fueled heavy rock.
