Ace's full name is Commander Arnold Judas Rimmer - he is an alternate version of the Rimmer character who features more regularly in the series, from a parallel dimension.
Ace Rimmer became known as Ace at school, when he was kept back a year at the age of 7.
Rimmer himself is the only one who refuses to see Ace as a hero, and he makes frequent references to Ace being gay or Ace and Lister being in love.

Sad Geezers Guide to Red Dwarf - Arnold Judas Rimmer Biography
Rimmer is a Hologram played marvellously by Chris Barrie and is the character in the series that everyone loves to hate.
Kryten once described Rimmer as, "having held a position (on Red Dwarf) of little or no importance, he was a lowly grease monkey… a zero… a nothing… a piece of sputum floating in the toilet bowl of life.
Rimmer tries to use this as a reason not to let Lister in when there is a chance he might be a Psiren.

He was killed by a radiation leak in the first episode of the series, and subsequently appears in the form of a hologrammatic simulation created by the ship's computer, Holly, as company for Lister, the only member of the crew to survive the disaster.
Rimmer also has an alternate universe counterpart, Ace Rimmer, who is a dashing, babe-magnet stud-muffin nonchalant hero -- the exact opposite.
Ace Rimmer's total personality difference to Arnold Rimmer boils down to being kept back a year in school.

The four core characters - Lister, the last human in the universe, Rimmer, a hologram of his worst enemy, Kryten, a cross between C3P0 and Data, and The Cat, a super-evolved humanoid feline - are very strongly written and played by a great cast.
The show is not perfect, as the small budget often shows and The Cat, and Rimmer in some cases, are often given lines that they simply wouldn't come out with just so they have something to say.
Rimmer left along with one of the two script-writers, which half-crippled the show.

The question of course arises as to whether Kryten’s defence of Rimmer, that he didn’t in fact repair the drive plate himself and thus wasn’t responsible for the radiation leak that killed the crew, is in fact true or merely a clever twisting of the facts.
Rimmer does at times try to hide the knowledge of his inadequacies from himself by blaming everyone else in sight for his misfortunes, but this is an argument against Kryten’s position.
Ace is, of course, meant to be a James Bond-type megahero (there’s even a Moneypenny scene in there in case we don't get it, and both Bond and Ace have the rank of Commander).
