About the albums: Overkill was the album that showed their potential to be one of the loudest, nastiest bands of all time.
After that minor set-back, Motorhead bounced back with what is still considered their definitive album, 1980's Ace of Spades, which spent eighteen weeks on the album charts, reaching #4, and whose title track is an unparalleled thrash masterpiece.
The hyperdrive insanity of Ace of Spades was preserved, with a heretofore unheard melodic element brought in by the replacement for guitarist Fast Eddie, Thin Lizzy's Brian Robertson.

Barnes & Noble.com Music - Ace of Spades [Bonus Tracks] -- Motörhead - CD
With the 1980 release of Ace of Spaces, Motörhead had their anthem of anthems -- that is, the title track -- the one trademark song that would summarize everything that made this early incarnation of the band so legendary, a song that would be blasted by legions of metalheads for generations on end.
And the album of the same name is legendary as well, among Motörhead's all-time best, often considered their single best, in fact, along with Overkill.
Ace of Spades was Motörhead's third great album in a row, following the 1979 releases of Overkill and Bomber, respectively.

This much-maligned album isn’t bad at all, really, though it was harshly received at the time since it failed to live up to the twin peaks that were Ace Of Spades and No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith.
Alas, this turned out to be a historically significant album in that a subsequent recording session with the Plasmatics’ infamous Wendy O. Williams (an attempted recording of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man”) proved to be disastrous, causing Clarke to quit the band (he then formed Fastway).

However, that didn't mean the group was boring -- the lethal attack of their buzzing guitars and Lemmy's hoarse vocals never became tedious because of the immediacy of the group's sound, as well as their talent for coming up with memorable riffs and tightly written songs.
The second half of this two-fer, the seminal Ace of Spades, spotlights the forefathers of thrash on one of their better-known albums; it features guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke, who later left and formed Fastway.

Few live albums are exciting as this one, so it’s pretty essential listening for anyone interested in the roar of electric guitars, thunderous drums and a throaty rasp, courtesy of England’s ugliest rascal.
That said, the fifth studio album is often regarded as a serious step down from the sheer splendour of the previous few releases – both in the songwriting department and the considerably slicker sound – but that’s an overblown misconception on a par with “Radiohead is this decade’s greatest band.
Each of their four studio albums since said 1981 classic contained a few tracks that are still worth listening to if you’re ready to get pumped up, but they were no longer 35-minute blasts of fury that rocked with an extraterrestrial force.
