  Aceh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aceh was the closest point of land to the epicenter of the massive 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that devastated much of the western coast of the region, including part of the capital of Banda Aceh.
The Dutch colonial government declared war on Aceh on 26 March 1873; the apparent immediate trigger for their invasion was discussions between representatives of Aceh and the U.S. in Singapore during early 1873.
The regencies in Aceh are: Aceh Besar, Central Aceh, East Aceh, Aceh Jaya, North Aceh, Aceh Singkil, South Aceh, Southeast Aceh, Southwest Aceh, Aceh Tamiang, West Aceh, Bener Meriah, Bireuen, Gayo Lues, Nagan Raya, Pidie, and Simeulue.

The military's task was not easy, as proportionally less voters had registered to vote in Aceh than in any of Indonesia's 27 provinces, apparently due to a combination of fear, intimidation and fraud during the registration process, cynicism about the value of participating, and outright boycott of the process.
After a period of conflict with the Indonesian army in the 1950s, Aceh received only minimal recognition for the special role it had played in the struggle for Indonesian independence, and for what it regards as its cultural uniqueness.

I think you may have somewhat exaggerated the significance of the Aceh War there, even though it was without doubt of great significance in several respects.
Firstly, it at first gave Aceh the opportunity to become the last traditional "Malay" sovereign, when the Sultan of Aceh, in a bid to defend his independence before the encroaching colonial empires, succeeded in getting several Orang Laut communities to recognize his suzerainty.
It was not a War between Aceh and the Netherlands, but between Aceh and the Netherlands East Indies as a new entity.
