Acela Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acela Express (often called simply Acela, leading to early confusion with the Acela Regional and Acela Commuter) is the name used by Amtrak for the high-speed tilting train service operating between Washington, D.C. and Boston via New York City and Philadelphia along the Northeast Corridor in the Northeast United States.
Acela Express trains are the only true high-speed trainsets in the United States.

 Boston.com / News / Nation / Acela's suspension another blow to rail
The Acela Express was supposed to be the driving force behind a new Amtrak: a high-speed train that could travel between Boston and New York in three hours and attract millions of new customers to turn around the struggling national railroad.
Railroad analysts say Acela's passengers are being lured away by low-cost competition, including airlines and buses, and its inability to shake a reputation of delays and breakdowns.
Acela accounts for roughly 20 percent of Amtrak's ridership in the Northeast corridor and about 45 percent of its revenues for that route in the five months ending in February, according to Amtrak's latest monthly performance report.

Today that train is called the Acela, and instead of being Amtrak's savior, it has become a frustrating burden.
The tale of the Acela is in many ways the story of Amtrak itself, where political pressures, tight budgets, contested regulations and design changes turned a high-speed train into something slower, more expensive and less reliable than what Amtrak had promised.
A reconstruction of Acela's history involving dozens of interviews and a review of court documents and other records shows that Amtrak was under intense pressure to deliver its new train as quickly as possible.
