Acenaphthylene and acenaphthene were chosen as precursors in the experiment because these molecules have a structure that can be described as a keystone in a process in which carbon atoms in a stellar wind condense into PAH species.
Acenaphthene has this group, since it is the hydrogenated form, but acenaphthylene does not (Fig.
Going a step beyond naphthalene to acenaphthylene and acenaphthene, which have the keystone molecular structure in Keller's model, appears to have made up for that deficiency, which is present in all laboratory experiments that attempt to mimic nature on the cosmic scale.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence (RTP) in Aqueous Solutions. An Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory Experiment
A complete laboratory experiment, designed to familiarize students with the uses of this type of spectroscopic signal and, at the same time, the application of computational methods (model fitting and parameter estimation) to obtain relevant thermodynamic results, is described.
The experiment involves the measurement of the phosphorescence spectra of acenaphthene (used as a model system) at room temperature through the formation of inclusion complexes with b- and g-cyclodextrins, the determination of the inclusion-constant value for the g-cyclodextrin complex, and the measurement of phosphorescence lifetimes.

A filter for removing a low molecular weight organic compound from air comprising: a polyurethane foam pretreated by using an organic extraction to extract contaminants originally contained in the polyurethane foam so as to form a plurality of binding sites for binding the low molecular weight organic compound.
As shown in table 1, the PUF filter of the present invention is significantly better than regular cigarette filters in removing toxic polynuclear aromatics such as 2-methyinaphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, dibenzofuran, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, carbazole, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)anthracene and chrysene.
This is demonstrated from comparing the weight of polynuclear aromatic compounds found in the impinger when a conventional filter was used to those found when the PUF filter was used.

Field and Laboratory Evaluation of the Impact of Tall Fescue on Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon Degradation in an Aged ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A field study was initiated in 1997 to assess the ability of tall fescue grass to remediate an aged creosote-contaminated surface soil.
Field monitoring was combined with aerobic microcosm experiments, microbial enumerations, and plant tissue analysis to determine the impact of tall fescue on the degradation of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and chrysene, and to elucidate the mechanisms of remediation.
In microcosms with soil from fescue cells, acenaphthene had a significantly higher degradation rate and lower final concentration after 180 days than in microcosms prepared with soil from unvegetated cells.
