  TSB Reports - Air 1994 - A94C0074
The aircraft cruises at approximately 55 to 60 knots.
Because the aft C of G reduced the aircraft's pitch stability, reduced its elevator effectiveness, and increased the aircraft's susceptibility to aerodynamic stall, the pilot was probably unable to avoid stalling the aircraft when it encountered gusty winds and possibly dust-devil-related wind shear.
Because of the effects of the aircraft's lack of tape aileron gap seals and its aft C of G, the pilot was probably unable to maintain control of the aircraft in the stall.

ACES II ACES II is a rugged, light-weight, easy-to-maintain ejection seat.
A drogue parachute is used for stabilization and deceleration in high-speed escapes and for stabilization during descent from high altitudes.
The seat is equipped with an emergency oxygen supply for high-altitude ejection, a survival kit and a harness release mechanism to release the crewman from the seat during automatic recovery.

Auto-Trim in Aces High - by Lephturn   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Aircraft trim has to do with the delicate balance of forces that is required to fly a plane through the air in a controlled fashion.
If your aircraft is not trimmed properly, it makes the situation worse, but it also means that by using the manual trim controls, you can improve your control of the aircraft.
If you are just cruising around on your way to a fight in Aces High, as long as CT is enabled you should be able to let go of the stick and have the aircraft stay on a straight and level course, or at least close.

Dawn of Aces - from CD-ROM Access
The task of these early pilots was to scout enemy positions, spot for artillery, carry out light bombing, and deny the use of the air to the enemy for those same purposes.
The aircraft were fragile, often experimental, and the pilots lacked useful devices such as parachutes.
In Dawn of Aces, you fly as a pilot for either the Allied or Central powers, and your mission is to actively seek out and shoot the enemy from the sky.

 ALTUS CUMULUS ELECTRIFICATION EXPERIMENT
The Altus Cumulus Electrification Study (ACES) was an uninhabited aerial vehicle (UAV) based project that investigated thunderstorms in the vicinity of the Florida Everglades in August 2002.
ACES was conducted to investigate storm electrical activity and its relationship to storm morphology, and to validate satellite-based lightning measurements.
Electric field mills were used to measure the vertical component of the electric field as the aircraft flew in the vicinity of electrified clouds.

 DAAC Study: Lightning Spies
Especially useful to ACES was ALTUS II’s ability to fly at relatively slow speeds, between 70 and 100 knots, or approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) per hour.
During the ACES experiment, the aircraft carried electrical, magnetic, and optical sensors to measure lightning activity and the electrical environment around thunderstorms.

The Ejection Site- The ACES II Seat: Tech Info
The ACES II is a third-generation seat, capable of ejecting a pilot from zero-zero conditions up to maximum altitude and airspeeds in the 600 KEAS range.
The ACES II survival kit is a soft pack that is stored under a fiberglass seat lid that is hinged at the front.
This is intended to prevent or limit the injuries to the crewmember as he/she is exposed to the windblast after exiting the aircraft.

Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 23, the initial air unit participating in the Guadalcanal operation, was assigned the mission of supporting the ground operations of the 1st Marine Division as well the air defense of the island once the landing had been made.
The Corsair was originally intended to fly from aircraft carriers, but its high landing speed, long nose that obliterated the pilot's view forward during the landing approach, and its tendency to bounce, banished the big fighter from American flight decks for a while.
The aircraft's paint is well-weathered and its main gear tires are "dusty" from the coral runways of the area.

The term “ace” has been around since the early days of World War I. Evidently, it was first used in reference to Adolphe C. Pegoud, a Frenchman who, after downing several enemy aircraft, was himself killed in 1915.
The skies were full of aircraft, and there ensued a prolonged, bloody contest to control the air and dictate the terms of combined arms campaigns.
Thus, a single downed aircraft could result in several “credits.” In World War II, however, the US adopted the more-restrictive British system, in which the number of victory credits was equal to the number of aircraft shot down.

P-38D aircraft reached USAAF squadrons in August, 1941, but the military did not consider them ready for combat; as such they were re-designated RP-38D,"R" for "Restricted to non-combat roles," amd only used for training.
The top P-38 ace of the MTO, William "Dixie" Sloan, arrived in Algeria, with the 82nd, at the end of 1942.
Another celebrated P-38 ace of the Mediterranean, was Bill Leverette, who on October 9, 1943, led the destruction of a flight of Ju 87 Stukas over the Aegean Sea.

Born May 5, 1913, and therefore apparently the oldest of the AVG aces, Bob Prescott had been a pre-law student in college.
He quit the AVG in March 1942 and thus received a "dishonorable discharge" from Chennault, depriving him of the veterans' benefits and Silver Star that were later awarded to those who stayed with the group to the end.
He was the only ace to be so treated, and probably for that reason I could find no photograph of him.
