 PowerLabs Acetylide Explosives Synthesis!
Acetylide or Carbide salts are the reason why you should never work acetylene gas with Silver, Copper or Ag/Cu plated utensils: These unstable crystalline explosive compounds form with relative ease by the ionic exchange between acetylene gas and silver or copper salts (reaction outlined below).
Acetylide explosives are unique in that unlike almost every other explosive known their detonation results in the formation of absolutely no gases (Ag2C2(s) => Ag2(s) + C(s)).
Acetylide Heat test (206k): Two small amounts of silver acetylide are dropped on a hot plate first set to 200C, than to 250C.

Silver acetylide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silver acetylide is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula Ag The name derived from the way it is synthezised, the alternative silver carbide is not used in literature, although the substance is similar to calcium carbide.
Silver acetylide can be produced by passing acetylene gas through a solution of silver nitrate.
This is the same synthesis from Berthelot in which he first found silver acetylide in 1866.

An acetylide ion is a strong base and a powerful nucleophile.
If the alkyl halide used is hindered, the acetylide ion will act as a base abstracting a proton from the substrate and causing an E2 elimination reaction.
Acetylide ion will attack ketones or aldehydes to form, upon protonation, tertiary and secondary alcohols respectively.

 Silver acetylide (Norman L. Reitzel)
Cupric acetylide is not as stable as silver acetylide because the copper ion is smaller and does not bind the ligand as well, however, it's not -much- less stable.
All of the transition metal acetylides are prone to detonate from wishful thinking, bad karma, and the phase of the moon.
The silver acetylide thus produced was certainly not as sensitive as nitrogen triiodide.

I have found that most satisfactory results are obtained in the practice of this invention, when the aluminum acetylide employed is one that may be generally characterized as an alkyl-alkoxy-aluminum acetylide, and most preferably, a lower alkyl-lower alkoxy-aluminum acetylide, for example, methyl-methoxy-aluminum acetylide.
The epoxy diol compounds are treated with a fluorinated aluminum acetylide (Compounds AIII) to yield the respective halogenated triol compounds (Compounds AIV) of this invention, which are new compounds of this invention.
I have found that the most satisfactory results are obtained in the practice of this invention when the acetylide reactant employed is one which may be generally characterized as a fluorinated-alkyl-alkoxy-aluminum acetylide, and most preferably a fluorinated lower alkyl-lower alkoxy aluminum acetylide, for example, fluorinated methyl-methoxy aluminum acetylide.

Silver Acetylide is only a little less touchy than fulminate of mercury but is very MUCH LESS POISONOUS.
The END OF REACTION TEST is to stop the bubbling long enough to let the water over the precipitated Silver Acetylide to become clear, then take a drop of the clear liquid and drop it on a few grains of salt on a dark colored plate.

I recently made some silver acetylide, using 55% HNO3 and silver obtained from old 3 phase electric contactors.
The contact points are pads brazed onto the copper bars and contain an appreciable amount of silver in the alloy.

Torrey reported in 1839 that explosive copper acetylide was the product responsible for the explosion.
Several researchers identified silver acetylide and copper acetylide as explosives and they were utilized in primers and blasting caps.
About 1860 and afterwards, Professor M.P. Berthelot studied the carbides and the flammable gas, which he called acetylene.
