  Mayim Acharonim
He answers that Tosafot were trying to offer a defense for the people of their generation who had stopped washing mayim acharonim, and thus they presented to reason of Sodomite salt as the main reason, thus allowing for the possibility of declaring the practice no longer necessary.
However, if the reason for mayim acharonim is due to personal danger, then even in war one must continue to wash his hands to ensure that they are free of any dangerous salts.
Since the point of mayim acharonim is to remove the filth from the hands, the water may not be at a temperature that is so high that it actually produces the opposite effect.

The Acharonim (see Pri Megadim Eishel Avraham 254:1 and Eglei Tal Ofeh 8:11) explain that the stringent view believes that the effect of the cooking of a liquid is nullified after it has cooled down.
Acharonim have debated the definition of liquid and solid in this context for centuries.
Some Acharonim (the Bach, Vilna Gaon, and Mishna Berura) believe that a food must be free of any liquid to qualify as a solid.

The publication of the Shulkhan Arukh thus marks the transition from the era of Rishonim to that of Acharonim.
According to many rabbis in the Orthodox Jewish community, scholars in one era within the history of halachic development cannot challenge the rulings of previous-era scholars, and hence Achronim cannot dispute the rulings of rabbis of previous eras unless they find support of other eras from rabbis in previous eras.
The question of which prior rulings can and cannot be disputed has led to efforts to define which rulings are within the Acharonim era with precision.

INSIGHTS TO THE DAF - ERUVIN 17
The Gemara explains that the reason for the strict obligation of Mayim Acharonim is that there might be some salt from the meal left on one's fingers, and if he wipes his eyes with his fingers he risks becoming blind from the toxicity of the Sedomis-salt contained in table salt.
The Mishnah Berurah adds (in the name of the Rambam) that even if the only reason to wash Mayim Acharonim is to prevent blindness from Sedomis-salt, and we no longer use Sedomis-salt, we should still wash Mayim Acharonim because there might be other salt that has the same characteristics of Sedomis-salt.
However, at the end of the laws of Mayim Acharonim, the Shulchan Aruch (181:10) cites the opinion of Tosfos (b) who says that the obligation of Mayim Acharonim no longer applies.

His enlightening response - as I understood it - is that in the Brisker perspective not all Rishonim are considered to be in the category that mandates adherence to their Halachic positions - thus, in this area, leaving Acharonim free to be mechaddeish.

Although we do not do this in practice, in a case like ours, where there are serious reasons to consider this a continuation of the Sheva Berachot period, it is appropriate to do so.
Recent Acharonim caution that this is true only when people outside the household take part in the meal (see Nisu’im K'hilchatam 14:128).

This has been the sanction for most Ashkenazim not to require making "mayim acharonim," although the Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chaim) 181:1 rules decisively that it is required of all persons.

Whatever the reasons given by the rishonim, for doing "mayim acharonim" or not doing "mayim acharonim," let every man continue that practice received and accepted by his fathers as halacha.
