Water Technology - Acheloos River Diversion Scheme - Greece
Acheloos River flows from the Pindos Mountains in the centre of Greece, westwards to the Ionian Sea and is separated from the Thessaly plain by the southern end of the mountain range.
Although a number of dams were built along the Acheloos in the intervening decades for HEP schemes, the diversion project itself remained stalled until 1984, when the Government expressed its renewed intention to proceed.
The Acheloos River rises in the Pindos Mountains in the centre of Greece and flows westwards to the Ionian Sea.

The aim of the Acheloos diversion project was to tunnel part of the flow of the Acheloos river eastwards, from its natural basin in Aetoloakarnania, to provide for additional water quantities to supplement irrigation in the Thessaly plain.
The tactical approach used was to blur the real goal of the Acheloos diversion scheme and to present the construction of the diversion tunnel as part of a series of supposedly “free standing investments” in hydroelectric power generation, beneficial for Greece’s regional development and therefore eligible for EC funding.
To further justify the transport of the Acheloos water to Thessaly the Greek government pointed to the fact that the situation of extensive over-exploitation of ground water could not be sustained for long.

The Acheloos is still a beautiful river full of water, flowing through one of the most unspoiled areas in Europe.
Scattered alongside the banks of the Acheloos are Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches and monasteries of considerable architectural, artistic and historical importance.
It is not known what volume of water the Acheloos will provide, because so much has been drained from it for irrigation purposes, and climatic changes have decreased the amount of rainfall and snow which used to replenish it.

Or she was a nymph, perhaps a daughter of Okeanos, who owned the goat, or, according to Pherekydes, she was Haimonios’ daughter and she had a bull’s horn which furnished whatever food and drink its possessor wished.
It seems that Acheloos’ horn is a phallic symbol; his loss to Herakles in a sexual contest (the fight over Deianeira) is fittingly represented as emasculation.

The task of the diversion of the Acheloos is not only a Greek but also a European task due to the size of the economical, developmental, technical, ecological and social factors involved.
The expensive plans of the Swiss company Electro-Watt in 1968 and of the Canadian SNC in 1970 both came to the conclusion that the diversion of the Acheloos was uneconomical and suggested the exploitation of the waters of the Peneios and its tributaries with other local water reserves (Lake Karla etc.).
We would say that the philosophy of the project is the widening of local inequalities in the country since it intends to develop an already for Greek standards developed part of the country, Thessaly, and the further downgrading of an already underdeveloped part of the country, Aetoloacarnania.
