It is the seat of the municipality of Iera Poli Messolonghiou.
It is located S of Agrinio, SSW of Karpenisi, WSW od Amfissa, W of the Rio-Antirio Bridge, W of Nafpaktos, E of Aitoliko and SE of Astakos.
The town was founded in the 16th century and is located between the Acheloos and the Evinos rivers.

The site includes an extensive coastal zone with a wetland complex consisting of a double delta formed by the Acheloos and Evinos Rivers, extensive lagoons and saltmarshes, restricted freshwater marshes, relicts of a riparian forest, coastal spits with dune formations, and scattered rocky hills in and around the area.
There are also a number of smaller lagoons: the Aitoliko Lagoon (1,400 ha) to the north, the Klissova Lagoon (3,000 ha) to the east, and the lagoons of Gourounopoules and Tholi (800 ha) to the west.
The average annual discharge of the Evinos River is 30 cubic m/sec from a catchment area of 1,130 sq km.

The objectives of the project were as follows: (1) Determination of leachate quality characteristics of the city of Volos; (2) Pilot plant investigation of a leachate treatment configuration; (3) Design of the full scale leachate treatment system and recommendations for the preparation of the relevant technical specifications.
The technology is currently applied in full scale at Rethymno Wastewater Treatment plant and various municipalities are considering employing the use of quicklime addition to dewatered sludge as the final stage of sludge treatment.
Specifically the project aims at (a) consulting the local water company about the necessary improvements and equipment needed for installing a telecontrol and telecommand system (b) installing and operating a mathematical optimization model (c) investigating and evaluating results (d) using this project's results for further research.

The Council of State (CoS) reached a decision concerning the diversion of River Acheloos to the plain of Thessaly for irrigation purposes.
