Acheson Gosford Irvine (December 7, 1837 – January 8, 1916) served as Commissioner of the Northwest Mounted Police (NWMP) from November 1, 1880 to March 31, 1886.
Irvine was born in Quebec in 1837, the son of John George Irvine, a captain in the Royal Quebec volunteers.
Irvine was involved with the events of the North-West Rebellion of 1885.

Acheson Gosford Irvine, the first native Canadian to command the Force, was born at Quebec City on December 7, 1837.
Irvine did not defend himself, and as a result of the criticism, resigned from the Force on March 31, 1886.
Following his retirement from the NWMP, Irvine became the warden of the Manitoba Penitentiary in 1892, the Stony Mountain Penitentiary from 1892 to 1913, and the Kingston Penitentiary from 1913 to 1914.

Acheson Irvine was born in Quebec on December 7, 1837 and joined the militia in 1864.
On March 17, 1885 Irvine received a telegraph from Superintendent Crozier that there was trouble and reinforcements were needed.
Irvine remained in Prince Albert throughout the rest of the resistance but with out any orders to participate.

This magnificent bronze mantle clock was presented to Commissioner Acheson Gosford Irvine in 1885 at the end of the North-West Rebellion.
He had joined the police in 1875 and, as assistant-commissioner and commissioner, had been responsible for maintaining the peaceful settlement of the Indian tribes on their reservations.
This letter to the bachelor Commissioner could have raised eyebrows at the time, however, to him it must have been justification for his actions directing the Force during the Rebellion.

The market is on Friday, and is well supplied with provisions: the market-house, situated in the centre of the town, was built by the Earl of Gosford, to whom the town belongs.

When Donald of the Isles marched across Scotland in 1411 to enforce his wife’s claim to the great northern earldom of Ross, the second-in-command of his army was his nephew, Lachlan Lubanach’s son, Eachuin ruadh nan cath, Red Hector of the Battles.
By a second marriage, with a daughter of Sir Archibald Acheson of Gosford, he had another son, Donald of Brolas, whose son Lauchlan became M.P. for Argyllshire, and whose descendants were to inherit the chiefship as sixth and successive baronets.
Sir Lachlan Maclean was created a baronet of Nova Scotia, with the designation "of Morvern," by Charles I. in 1632, and from that time onward, through the Civil War and all the troubles of the Stewarts, the Macleans remained strong and faithful supporters of the Jacobite cause.
