	About Achinks, Russia
		The city of Achinsk is spread on a spur of the Arga mountain range, on the right shore of the Chulym river (a confluent of the Ob river) where the Chulym river is crossed by trans-Siberian Railroad and Federal road M-53.
		Achinsk is a junction of railroads to Abakan and Lesosibirsk.
		In 1782 Achinsk was promoted to the category of the Tomsk province’s district towns, in 1822 it became a district town of the Yenisei province.

		Achinsk is a small town of around 120,000 people - and you should take that on the Russian scale, whereby, in my experience, anything below a million people does feel quite small town in atmosphere.
		Until 1991, Achinsk was a town closed to foreigners (in order to hide the wonders of it's aluminium factory), and so, even now, any kind of visitor from abroad is very much a novelty.
		Living and working in a small Russian town like Achinsk may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is not hard, if you let yourself, to develop a real affection for the place, and in particular for the people.

		Shmarin's plant is the lifeblood of Achinsk, a Siberian town of 130,000 people, 160 kilometers (99 miles) west of Russia's aluminum capital, Krasnoyarsk.
		Under Russia's unique bankruptcy system, Achinsk was placed under "external management," in which an outside official appointed by an arbitration court is charged with returning the plant to solvency.

		The Achinsk Refinery VNK is the only enterprise of its kind in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and also plays an extremely important role in the markets for petroleum products in adjacent regions.
		In 1994, a government decree stated that the Achinsk Refinery should become part of the Eastern Petroleum Company (VNK), which was created from the assets of Tomskneft, a large oil-producing enterprise with considerable promise.
		In 2006, the Achinsk Refinery processed 5.65 million tonnes of oil and produced 1.13 million tonnes light gasoline, 0.28 million tonnes of jet fuel, 1.74 million tonnes of diesel fuel and 2.14 million tonnes of heating oil.

		Siberia's huge Achinsk ore combine, which provides raw material for aluminium, is further from the sea than almost anywhere else in the world.

		Another brother had always lived in Achinsk and occasionally gave my mother troubles, which she took as a good sister would.
		The school was big (about 1500 pupils) and had a boarding school as well where children from small villages all around Achinsk stayed at school for a week and went home for the weekend.

		Subsequently, the second half of 1930 and 1931, the right bank of the Chulym River became the main destination of deportations from the province of Achinsk: swamps and burned-out woodlands at its middle and lower reaches (today Tegul'det district, province of Tomsk), and further north to the Chichkayul Basin.
		Later, some of the exiles from these territories were moved to the mines of the Tissul district (today Kemerovo region) or to the Saralinsk mines (Northwest-Khakassia), but the majority stayed on the other side of the Chulym River until their final release.
		From the southern part of the province of Achinsk, from the Ushur district, they also deported the exiles at first to the Chulym River, but later they started sending them directly to the Saralinsk and other mines in the Northwest-Khakassian mountains, to the Saralinsk and Chebakovsk districts (today Shira) in the Autonomous Region of Khakassia.
