  ATSDR - MMG: Hydrogen Chloride
Hydrogen chloride is used for cleaning, pickling, and electroplating metals; in refining mineral ores; in petroleum well extraction; in leather tanning; and in the refining of fats, soaps, and edible oils.
Hydrogen chloride is a strong mineral acid; its corrosive and irritant properties are the primary concern in both acute and chronic exposures.
Hydrogen chloride gas is intensely irritating to the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and respiratory tract.

Acyl chloride - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
In organic chemistry, an acyl chloride (or acid chloride) is an organic compound which is a reactive derivative of a carboxylic acid.
Acid chlorides are very reactive, the presence of the chlorine on the carbonyl carbon makes it a very good electrophile, since both the oxygen and chlorine are strongly electron withdrawing, giving the carbon a large partial positive charge.
Since a chloride ion is a good leaving group, this is a very useful compound synthetically, it can be used to prepare any carboxylic acid derivative: an acid anhydride, an ester or an amide by reacting acid chlorides with: a salt of a carboxylic acid, an alcohol, or an amine respectively.

g., acid chlorides, have been prepared by reaction of liquid fatty acid with halogenating agents, such as phosphorus tribromide, phosphorus pentabromide, phosphorous trifluoride, and chlorinating agents, such as phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride, followed by separation of the acyl halide, such as fatty acid halide, from an inorganic phase.
Thus, when preparing fatty acid halides on a commercial scale, one of the problems encountered is the separation of the fatty acid halide from the inorganic material because settling of the two layers is often very time consuming and difficult due to possible emulsification of the two phases.
Because residual phosphorous acid in the acid chloride during stripping reduces the acid chloride content, a post-stripped fatty acid chloride with high assay is an indirect measure of good phosphorous acid separation, while a reduced fatty acid chloride assay indicates poor or incomplete phosphorous acid separation.

Hydrochloric acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hydrochloric acid, or muriatic acid by its historical but still occasionally used name, has been an important and frequently used chemical from early history, and was discovered by the alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan around AD 800.
Hydrochloric acid is frequently used in chemical analysis and to digest samples for analysis.
Hydrochloric acid is a fundamental chemical, and as such it is used for a large number of small scale applications, such as leather processing, household cleaning, and building construction.

C&EN: Latest News - Acid Chlorides On Silicon Surfaces
The silicon surface, represented by the Si cluster, abstracts chlorine from butanoyl chloride and then chemisorbs the butanoyl radical.
The process simply consists of wetting a silicon surface with an acid chloride and scribing.
The group tested the amine reactivity of the acid chloride-terminated monolayers using octylamine, morpholine, piperazine, and the protein bovine serum albumin.

The acid chloride forming agent can be chosen from the group of reagents that is generally known as such.
Preferably the acid chloride forming agent is used in an excess relative to the amount the salt with formula (2), for instance between 1 and 3 equivalents, more preferably between 1.2 and 1.
When a large excess of acid chloride forming agent is used, preferably higher amounts of NMM are used, and when a lower excess of acid chloride forming agent is used, preferably lower amounts of NMM are used.

In the diagram, the R group is derived from the carboxylic acid and the R' group from the alcohol or phenol

The energies for the silicon cluster and acid chloride were summed, those for the two radicals were summed, and these were then compared with the energy of the final molecule.
The errors are the square roots of the sum of the variances of the yields from the octanoyl chloride and suberoyl chloride surfaces.
To demonstrate the amine-reactivity of acid chloride terminated monolayers, patches of silicon were scribed under suberoyl chloride (ClCO(CH COCl) or octanoyl chloride (a control), washed with hexane, and then exposed for 24 h to 0.1 or 0.2 M solutions of octylamine, morpholine, and piperazine, and 10 ppm bovine serum albumin (BSA), all in DMSO.

Etching with Air Regenerated Acid Cupric Chloride
The chloride ion, Cl is one such coordination ion for Cu If one prepares a solution containing Cu and Cl for example by dissolving cupric chloride in water, then that solution should have the ability to etch copper metal because the Cu ions are soluble in such a solution, and reaction [1] can proceed.
With excess hydrochloric acid in the mix, the chloride balance is always maintained, and the solution effectively just grows as it consumes four ingredients during its lifetime.
Acid will continuously be consumed by the reaction and so it can be a good idea keep it in check.

The ammonium chloride bath is the most forgiving of the three major types of acid zinc plating because of its wide operating parameters.
Because potassium chloride is less expensive than ammonium chloride, the maintenance costs of the mixed bath are lower than the ammonia bath, and it does not require boric acid.
The pH is controlled using dilute hydrochloric acid to lower and dilute ammonium hydroxide to raise the pH of the ammonia bath.
