Acidophile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An acidophile is an inorganic particle or living organism (or part thereof) that tends toward acidic conditions or acids.
The adjective form of acidophile, acidophilic is a technical term used by histologists to describe a particular staining pattern of cells and tissues when using haematoxylin and eosin stains.
Acidophilic organisms are those that thrive under highly acidic conditions.

 The Pancreas and Salivary Glands
The latter are the acidophilic (pink) structures with round nuclei in the center of tall cells.
Striated ducts are lined by cuboidal to columnar acidophilic cells and are so-named because of characteristic striations in the basal portions of the cells which are due to the alignment of mitochondria between deep infoldings of the basal cell membrane.
During secretory activity, acidophilic granules fill the apical portions of the cells, while mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum with its associated basophilic RNA are located basally.

Flow cytometry based techniques to study testicular acidophilic granulocytes from the protandrous fish gilthead ...
However some microscopical observations have pointed to the appearance of macrophages, acidophilic granulocytes and lymphocytes in the testicular connective tissue of some teleosts in different stages of the reproductive cycle, mainly during post-spawning (9-14).
We have previously reported that gilthead seabream acidophilic granulocytes infiltrate the testis at post-spawning, settle close to the spermatogonia and accumulate intracellular interleukin-1β (IL-1β) (15).
To conclude, our data support that fish testicular cells may be cultured and analysed by FC (21), although several modifications of the currently available methods are needed, depending on the fish salinity adaptation and the complexity of the testis of each species studied.

Among the acidophilic heterotrophic bacteria that have been isolated from AMD are facultatively anaerobic Acidiphilium species which catalyse the dissimilatory reduction of ferric iron, and obligate anaerobes that catalyse the dissimilatory reduction of sulphate to sulphide.
Acid-tolerant/ acidophilic sulphate-reducing bacteria were also isolated successfully from AMD stream sediment, using acidic overlay media.
The results showed that indigenous acidophilic bacteria can be used successfully in packed-bed bioreactors to promote targeted changes in AMD water chemistry, and thereby facilitate bioremediation of these polluting waste waters.

This is because synthetic dyes are prepared so that the coloring part of the dye is either acid (anionic) or basic (cationic) in its chemical behavior.
The cationic or basic dye has an affinity for nuclei and ribosomes that exist in the tissue with a net negative charge and are termed basophilic; the anionic or acid dye has an affinity for positively charged cytoplasm and other components like mitochondria and cilia, which are then termed acidophilic structures.
It is often used to differentiate acidophilic extracellular fibers from acidophilic cytoplasm.

Many designated media have been found to be unsatisfactory both for enumerating and isolating acidophiles from environmental samples (acid mine drainage etc.) and for some species and strains of chemolithotrophs grown in the laboratory.
However, the _overlay_ technique, in which an acidophilic heterotrophic bacterium is incorporated into the underlayer of a two-layer gel, has been used successfully to culture all known iron-oxidising mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria.
