Sturgeon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They pass a great part of the year in the sea, but periodically ascend large rivers, some in spring to deposit their spawn, others later in the season for some purpose unknown; only a few of the species are exclusively confined to fresh water.
Acipenser gueldenstaedtii is one of the most valuable species of the rivers of Russia, where it is known under the name "Ossétr" (?); it is said to inhabit the Siberian rivers also, and to range eastwards as far as Lake Baikal.
Acipenser stellatus, the "Seuruga" of the Russians, occurs likewise in great abundance in the rivers of the Black Sea and of the Sea of Azov.

Because the Chesapeake Bay continues to support juvenile habitats, we propose that curtailed or absent spawning stock or spawning habitat, or both, are principal factors that have contributed to lack of Atlantic sturgeon recovery during the twentieth century.
In Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus, may be functionally extirpated (Secor(1); Speir and O'Connell(2)).
Although sporadic observations of yearlings and adults have been reported over the last two decades (Colligan et al., 1998), the probability of population extirpation based upon the infrequency of these observations, is high (Grogan and Boreman, 1998).
