Ackermann steering geometry is a geometric arrangement of linkages in the steering of a car or other vehicle designed to solve the problem of wheels on the inside and outside of a turn needing to trace out circle s of different radii.
The Ackermann steering geometry arranges this automatically by moving the steering pivot points inward so as to lie on a line drawn between the steering kingpin s and the centre of the rear axle.
The steering pivot points are joined by a rigid but in length adjustable bar, the tie rod, which is also part of the, for example, rack and pinion steering mechanism.

"Ackermann steering geometry" approximates the correct geometry required so both wheels turn about a common point, and occurs nicely when the steering arms are designed to point toward the centre of the rear track.
Ackermann geometry is common on road cars (low lateral accelerations) so that the wheels turn freely in corners without dragging.
Parallel steering (wheels turn the same amount) or even Reverse Ackermann (outside wheel turns more than inside wheel) is common in racing to try and get peak force from both tyres at high lateral accelerations.

The steering geometry causes the inner rear wheel to lift off the ground while cornering, which means the wheel can rotate faster than it is passing over the ground.
Ackermann steering uses the angle of the stub axle arms (and often an offset on the steering column) to make the inner wheel on a corner turn more than the outside wheel.
When we turn a corner, the steering geometry (but mainly the caster setting and scrub radius) causes the inside wheel to move down in relationship to the chassis, and the outside wheel to move up.

At the apex, the steering is turned to the maximum amount for that turn.
While the turn in benefit helps, it may cause a loose condition on exit due to the steering being overturned at that point in the corner.
You may find that you notice the Ackerman effect on higher banked tracks due to the loading of the left front where as on flat tracks the left front has less weight on it causing more of a undesirable dragging condition.

C22 Steering arm initial angle c1: This is how you make the steering arms point inwards, the classic way to achieve Ackermann geometry.
The next column uses your geometry to work out the angle of the right-hand wheel (as you look at the screen), when the left-hand wheel is turned to the Ackermann-ideal angle for that turn radius.

What I did was to detach the port tiller from the connection bar and watched where the idle tiller pointed relative to its connection point while steering here, there and everywhere (trying to avoid hitting anybody or anything).
Observations: Steering straight ahead: As expected the idle tiller lines up perfectly with the attachment point on the connection bar.
I had actually intended to hook things up in a zero Ackermann mode but the bits and pieces I had brought for this purpose were not up to the task so it remains to be done.

This engineering solution is attributable to Ackermann (note - this needs researching, I know nothing about him - it's not the mathematician AFAIK)
