  the "acoelomates", especially phylum Platyhelminthes
The acoelomates are so called because each of them has neither a pseudocoel nor a true coelom.
You are expected to study the material as called for in the laboratory-manual.
Here is a list of preserved material of the "acoelomates" that is available in the Department of Biology.

In addition, the Radiata are still a monophyletic group, and the Bilateria are still a monophyletic group.
However, the relationships among the acoelomates, pseudocoelomates, and true coelomates are different.
While the true phylogenetic relationships among some phyla of animals are still contested, you should remember how these groups differ in major morphology and physiology.

radiata and the acoelomates) possess a single opening into their digestive cavity, one that serves as both a mouth and an anus

Reading: Your reading will deal only with the Phylum Platyhelminthes; we will not consider Nemertea and Gnathostomulida which are also acoelomate animals.
Begin your reading at the top of page 417 and continue to page 421; stop when you reach Class Turbellaria.
Describe the major improvements in the body plan of Platyhelminthes compared to other multicellular organisms you have studied.

 Acoelomate Introduction
The dorsal (top) side is kept facing up and the ventral (bottom) side is kept down and usually specialized for locomotion.
Although there are three phyla termed acoelomates because they lack a space (body cavity) between the endoderm and ectoderm, only one will be included in the Zoo Lab website, the Phylum Platyhelminthes, which includes over 20,000 free-living and parasitic species of animals called flatworms.
Note: the term "worm" has been loosely applied to a number of elongate, bilateral invertebrate animals without appendages; it is not a taxonomic term!

The major modern phyla are all considered monophyletic: each is presumed to have arisen from a common ancestor.
The phyla are identified by major body plans: radial or bilateral symmetry; cephalization; protostome or deuterostome; acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, or coelomate; methods of reproduction.
Body Plan: bilaterally symmetric; blind sac digestive system; 3 germ layers; no coelom (acoelomate)

The phylum as a whole has adult bilateral symmetry and cephalization (the development of a head with sensory organs, in most members).
Flatworms have three tissue layers: ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm and a body plan that is acoelomate and sac-like with a single opening.
The mesoderm layer gives rise to muscles and reproductive organs.
