York is a city in northern England, at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss.
Paulinus of York brought Christianity to the region in the early 7th century with the conversion of King Edwin of Northumbria and the first Minster is believed to have been built in 627, although the location of the early Minster is a matter of dispute.
York is an ancient borough, and was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Corporations Act 1835 to form a municipal borough.

The liberty remained more or less stable from very early times until 1884 and included the walled city, some of the city parishes extending north and east, and the open tracts of land comprising Knavesmire and Bishop's Fields on the south and west.

The merger of two secondary schools in York has been agreed by councillors.
The merger of Lowfield and Oaklands schools, which is due to a fall in pupil numbers, is part of a £10m redevelopment of the Oaklands site.
The council said it had received no objections to the plans and it hoped work could begin in May 2007.
