Acorn Computers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acorn Computers was a British computer company established in Cambridge, England, in 1978.
Acorn's BBC Micro computer dominated the UK educational computer market during the 1980s and early 1990s, drawing many comparisons with Apple in the U.S. Though the company was broken up into several independent operations in 2000, it leaves an impressive legacy, particularly in the development of RISC personal computers.
Shortly afterwards, the literacy programme computer contract was awarded to Acorn, and the Proton was launched early in 1982 as the BBC Micro.

The Acorn platform is probably one of the smallest computer platforms, consisting of some estimated 500,000 machines (excluding older 8-bit computers).
In the 1980s, practically all British schools were equipped with their computers (and Acorn machines were also quite popular as home computers), but when Wintel PCs began to gain importance, more and more schools switched over to that platform.

The Electron had been launched in 1983, but problems with the supply of its ULAs meant that Acorn was not able to capitalise on the 1983 Christmas selling period – a successful advertising campaign, including TV advertisements, had led to 300,000 orders, but the Malaysian suppliers were only able to supply 30,000 machines.
Acorn continued to produce updated models of the Archimedes including a laptop (the A4) and in 1994 launched the Risc PC, where the top specification included a 200 MHz+ StrongARM processor.
In January 1999, Acorn Group changed the name of Acorn Computers Ltd to Element 14 Ltd as it recast itself in the image of ARM – that is as a developer of intellectual property (IP), in this case in the digital signal processing (DSP) market.

Acorn Pages - About Acorn Computers and RISC OS
Due to their excellent design and ease of use, Acorns were used in most schools in the UK until a few years ago, when schools unfortunately began to move over to Windows PCs, considering it important that children should use 'industry standard' computers.
Acorns and RISC OS computers are widely used in the TV industry, partly due to their reliability and suitability for performing certain tasks.
Acorn started life in the early 80's, and produced the very successful BBC Microcomputer, which was used in the majority of schools in the UK.

 Acorn or Wintel?
Acorn's programmers, working with the BBC's requirements, did some very clever things with it and, in the early '80s the BBC computer was a far more versatile and 'cutting edge' machine than the contemporary IBM 8086 microcomputers.
Acorn's open-ness means that all OS features are fully documented and available to all programs, so if programs are written to interface in the standard way with operating system calls, they will always work and as a result the programs have to do less work so they are smaller and much more reliable.
Acorn's RISC processor is a lot smaller and simpler than a corresponding Intel chip: as a result they are a lot cheaper to produce and they also consume a lot less power.

The Acorn BBC model A was the successor of the Acorn Atom and its first name was Acorn Proton.
It was a very popular computer in the UK and was widely used in schools, but it didn't have great success elsewhere (even though it did have great features, it was too expensive).
Acorn also made a "cheap" version of the BBC (fewer connectors & video modes) called Acorn Electron.
