Topic: Acornsoft Arcadians

Acornsoft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acornsoft was the software arm of Acorn Computers Ltd, and was a major publisher of software for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron.
Acornsoft also published a number of text adventure games by authors such as Peter Killworth, including Philosopher's Quest and Countdown to Doom, that remain highly regarded within the interactive fiction community.
Acornsoft also published and distributed a range of educational software developed by ASK (Applied Systems Knowledge) that were widely used in schools running BBC Micros.

Once the game is loaded, the first screen shows the keyboard controls, and asks you to select 1 or 2 to start - select 1 for one player and 2 for two players.
Move the laser-base across the screen to aim at the Arcadians hovering in convoy over you.
Arcadians in the different rows are worth different amounts and, when killed in mid-flight, are worth double their original number of points.

Superior Software eventually came in and bought the whole of Acornsoft's back catalogue in 1986 and from then on some of the games were re-released on the Play It Again Sam, and Acornsoft Hits collections.
After five years in the ring it was still the unbeaten champion, and you can imagine why, Acorn had all the knowledge about the beeb, everything which it was capable of, and how to do it in the best way possible, which is why most of their games are extremely well programmed.
Acornsoft offered a prize for anyone who could complete the riddles in the game, the prize being a badge saying "I conquered the Castle of Riddles".

Only the Best BBC Micro Games / BBC Games from the past - AcornSoft Games
The second Arcade Conversion by AcornSoft, was a straight clone of Williams Defender - and once again, it was quite excellent.
One thing in particular stood out on Arcadians: It was the first BBC game I had seen (at the time) which had a demo mode where the computer played the game itself.
This was the game that at the time, placed AcornSoft at the top of the BBC Software Scene ladder.

The Retro Years - Review - Beebs bobble but they don't fall down
And the very fact that it *was* "the school micro" meant that it was something of an unfashionable machine.
Snapper (ie Pacman), Arcadians (Galaxian) and Planetoid (Defender) are among the best 8-bit games ever released, with excellent and colourful graphics, decent sound and above all tremendous *gameplay*.
Acornsoft had some very notable other hits as well.

The well-known columnist Hac Man, in the September 1990 edition of The Micro User, went so far as to suggest Acornsoft's venerable Elite could be described as a rich man's Cylon Attack.
This one is hardly likely to challenge the dominance of the classic IF games from Level 9 and Acornsoft, but may be worth a look if you're a fan of the genre.
The story is straightfoward with you, as the professor, trying to find the crystals that will return you to normal size, after a dropped potion shrinks you to the height of 1 inch.

VideogameJunkie - BBC Model B Feature
Although a large number of developers and publishers released games on the BBC the majority of those people remember were published by either Acornsoft or, more often, Superior Software.
Original popular titles from Acornsoft included Elite as previously mentioned along with Labrynth, Starship Command, and Revs and others.
Labrynth was a simple but addictive maze game that had you hunting down crystals while avoiding and destroying ghosts (which at the time always reminded me of the Slimer ghost from Ghostbusters).

There were also a few other titles he wrote for Acornsoft under his real name, Nick Pelling, though I can't remember for the life of me what they were!

My first computer: The BBC Micro - Desktops - Breaking Business and Technology News at silicon.com
But of course for all those of us who didn't really desire the BBC for its, ahem, educational properties (although that's what we told our parents) the games were a joy.
Titles like Rocket Raid, Chuckie Egg, Arcadians and Meteor are still incredibly evocative to anyone who had the pleasure of a BBC in their formative years.
Strangely it never understood the fact that I had a dead leg from sitting on the floor for too long and a headache from a combination of tape recorder grief and irradiating my brain for six hours in front of a 24-inch TV screen.

After a few years, you could get all the great coin-op games, although they were usually given different names to avoid licensing.
The big three were Superior Software, Acornsoft and Micro Power.
The fierce competition saw them churn out plenty of great titles right up to the end, when all three were merged into Superior Software, which soon disappeared itself.

General Comments... - Review - In memory of Rod Hull...
Although the Beeb suffered from being very expensive (the Model B was over twice the price of the Spectrum 48K), you did get a good quality machine for your money.
Acornsoft's "conversions" of then-current arcade games were so good it seemed rather ironic in their latter days that they moaned so much about copyright - Planetoid (Defender), Arcadians (Galaxians) and Snapper (Pac-Man) are pixel-perfect.
And then there was Acornsoft's greatest achievement: Elite.

Acornsoft then phoned me up, said come to Cambridge and do the same game on the BBC (which turned out to be Arcadians) - I walked out of there with a brand-new BBC under my arm.
At one stage, I worked from 6pm to 8am so that I wasn't hassled by people phoning up trying to fix clashes between Acornsoft games and Computer Concepts' ROMs, nor by the constant grind of the daisywheel printer the other side of the partition.
I don't know how many Acornsoft Chess sold, but it wasn't particularly great.

In general, if you're having problems with the palette - sometimes the reason for you getting a completely blank screen - try disabling the 'Palette' option, and pushing f10 during the game to get the current settings.
If the game uses Caps Lock and Ctrl for left and right remember to select the 'Arcadians' keymap which will duplicate these keys on 'A' and 'S', making the game far easier to control.
The 'exact speed' option doesn't always work, and although Warm Silence Software claim that Snapper runs at the correct speed I'm afraid it doesn't on my machine, and I know of at least one other person with the same problem.
