Main Street Bridge (Jacksonville) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Main Street Bridge was the second road bridge built across the St.
Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida (the first was the Acosta Bridge).
In 1968, a flyover was built between the ramps to I-95 (SR 9) and the bridge, with frontage roads continuing to serve Miami Road and several other cross streets.

 FEC Strauss Bascule Bridge
A new highway bridge (the St. Elmo Acosta bridge, now gone, from which these photos were taken) next to the FEC made swinging the earlier bridge difficult, and it was desired to make the entire mainline twin-track all the way from Jacksonville Terminal to Miami Station.
The secret to the operation of the bridge is a gigantic concrete double counterweight, mounted on the south end of a diamond-shaped armature (the Counterweight Truss or "walking beam") on top of the Counterweight Tower (span number 8; the FEC numbers the spans sequentially from north to south).
The bridge should be of strong interest to modelers because it is 1) an unusually grand design and 2) a twin-track version of this design, and 3) it mixes the moveable span with the counterweight tower, three through-trusses, one through-girder (for small boats) and twenty-one deck girder spans.

The impact of Acosta's outdated concepts on science is a destructive one, as their uncritical reception in archaeology, physical anthropology, ethnology, or genetics makes research results unreliable and questionable, as long as valuable data, exact measurements, and empirical details are interpreted within the framework of this Renaissance fiction.

Bridge aesthetics is an important design consideration for all new bridges in Florida, especially for structures located in high profile areas of the state.
A key issue of bridge lighting systems is the ability to maintain such systems throughout the life of the structure.
The proposed lighting scheme for the MacArthur Causeway Bridge is to be similar to the Dodge Island bridge which is also located in the vicinity.

Measuring 1,680 feet in length with 14 spans, the massive Main Street Bridge has become a landmark in downtown Jacksonville and was heralded as a major accomplishment when built at the end of the 1930s to carry US 1 over the St. Johns River.
Although builders emphasized functional considerations, the bridge produces an aesthetic effect through its strength, powerful 200-foot high lift towers, and graceful reach across the St. Johns River.
During the 1930s the citizens of Jacksonville and Duval County realized the need for a new downtown bridge over the St. Johns to supplement the Acosta Bridge, the first vehicular bridge built across the river in 1919-1920.
