Acotango, along with Volcán Humarata to the north and Cerro Capurata (also known as Cerro Elena Capurata) to the south, comprises the Nevados de Quimsachata volcano group.
Quimsachata means "three" in the Andean Aymará language, and 5730-m-high Humarata, Acotango, and 5990-m-high Cerro Capurata straddle the Chile-Bolivia boundary along a roughly N-S line.
The 6052-m-high Acotango stratovolcano is the central and highest of the three stratovolcanoes.

Acotango is a volcano located on the border between Bolivia and Chile.
Together with its two brothers Maria Capunata and Guallatire (the only smoking volcano in the area) are know as Quimsa Chatas (meaning the triplets).
The climb of Acotango can be the ultimate trekking peak experience.

From left to right, the 5.730-m-high Volcán Humarata, 6.052-m-high Volcán Acotango, and 5.990-m-high Cerro Capurata volcanoes.
Finally, to the left, the active Guallatiri Volcano (6.060 m.) the fumarola of which can be seen as a mist hanging over its summit.
