Acoustic guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An acoustic guitar is a modern form of guitar descended from the Classical guitar, but generally strung with steel strings for a brighter, louder sound.
The acoustic guitar is often played with one or more plectra, or guitar picks, small plates of hard plastic or other material used to strike and strum the strings.
One variation on the standard acoustic guitar is the 12 string guitar, which sports an additional doubling string for each of the traditional six strings.

 Acoustic Guitar
The strings of a six-string guitar are tuned to E, A, D, G, B, E, a fourth apart except for the major third interval between B and G. Frets are placed by the fret rule "one-eighteenth the remaining length of the string".
Frets on guitars are placed by the fret rule "one-eighteenth the remaining length of the string".
If the frets of the guitar are set for equal temperament), then the 5th fret is 5 semitones or an equal tempered musical fourth.

 Acoustic Guitar History
Italy was the center of guitar world during the 17th century, and the the Spanish school of guitar making only began to flourish late in the 18th century after the addition of the sixth string.
Guitar music became especially popular in Spain and Antonio de Torres developed the Spanish guitar in its modern form, with a broadened body, increased waist curve, thinned belly, improved internal bracing, single string courses replacing double courses, and a machined head replacing wooden tuning pegs.
Acoustic guitars are used most often in folk and jazz music.

 Learn to Play Acoustic Guitar
Crafted mostly from various hard and soft woods, the acoustic guitar, sometimes referred to as a folk guitar, is a modern descendent of the classical or Spanish guitar.
Though most acoustic guitars have six strings, one common variation is the 12-string guitar which has six pairs (courses) of strings, the lower four of which are tuned an octave apart, while the high E and B strings are tuned in unison.
Acoustic guitar is the quintessential instrument of much western popular music of the 20 th and 21 st centuries, including folk, gypsy jazz, country and western, bluegrass, rock, and pop.

Audio Recording Center: Acoustic Guitar Techniques, Article
While the acoustic guitar remains one of the most simple instruments by design, it also remains one of the hardest to get a great sound on in the studio.
You'll quickly discover that the electric will overpower the acoustic and the most effective way to even them out is to compress the acoustic a little bit more than what you may have already done going to tape so you can bring the acoustic's level up high enough to compete with the electric.
You can also make an acoustic guitar sound bigger or more rock-like by panning the original to one side and a delayed signal (short delays are best) of the same guitar to the other side.

Slide Guitar Lesson From Acoustic Guitar Magazine by Glenn Weiser
Handy’s description of his encounter with this unknown blues player gives us an early glimpse of slide guitar, which is the technique of using a smooth, hard object-usually a hollow metal or glass cylinder-to change the pitches of the strings.
Also known as bottleneck guitar (the necks of bottles make good slides), this style had its origins in African one-stringed instruments and also, some say, in Hawaiian guitar styles, which were brought to the south by Hawaiian soldiers during the Spanish-American War.
Because slide guitar is traditionally a fingerpicking style, I recommend as a general rule that you use the right-hand thumb to pluck the fourth, fifth, and sixth strings and the other fingers for the first, second, and third strings.

 Acoustic Guitar Recording Techniques
Close-miking -- approximately six to 12 inches from the guitar -- is used in most pop and other contemporary recordings that feature acoustic guitar.
Cardioid mics are generally best used for close-miking guitar because they exhibit less bass proximity effect (or bass boost) than other directional types when placed close to the sound source.
While the best-sounding position can depend upon the guitar, the room, or the mics, typically, placing the mics around seven inches in front of the guitar's 12th fret will tend to de-emphasize midrange frequencies.

The most attractive instruments appeared to be drums or guitar, and drums were out of the question as I knew no one else who played any instruments (so I couldn't form a band) and I lived, at the time, in a small end terrace house which would have meant neighbour and noise problems.
My '00', stamped on the neck-block on the inside of the guitar as Number 001, was stolen from Bill Dinsdale's workshop a few years later when I had given it back to him to replace the fingerboard with a new design we had worked out between us.
The new guitars inspired Kieran and myself and a frenetic few years followed with me forming the "Tape and Tab Club - (T'n'T)", in about 1979, dragging together some excellent guitarists from around the country, and stimulating a dramatic amount of arranging, composing, playing and recording.

Acoustic guitar Tablature (Tab) & Midi - Downloads Page
Tablature is an excellent way in which to put guitar compositions and arrangements onto paper for learning and teaching purposes, and also to enable you to remember tunes from one year to the next, a definite factor if a tune isn't played for a year or two.
It is an excellent medium because it shows exactly where to place your fingers to find the notes and these finger placements are often the best way to find the notes to make the movement of your fretting hand the easiest and simplest as well as the most economical and efficient.
Using normal/conventional music notation, every time you change the tuning on your guitar you then have to re-learn the notes on the fingerboard to be able to find them when they are being read from the dots on the printed page.
