The District of Acre (also known as the Province of Acre) was one of the Districts of Palestine, established by the Ottoman Empire, was located within the boundaries of the modern State of Israel.
In 1888, the Districts of Acre, Latakia, Tripoli, Beirut, and Nablus were separated from Syria and combined with the Province of Beirut.
During the crusades of the 1200s, the term "District of Acre" was used to identify the city of Acre itself.

The city of Acre or Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, dating back to the time of the Pharaoh Thutmose III (1504-1450 BCE).
Acre fell under Ottoman control until the Turks were defeated in 1918 by the British.
Today, the population of Acre is approximately 40,000 and has one of the higher proportions of non-Jews of any of Israel's cities, with roughly 25 percent Christians, Muslims, Druze and Baha'is. The city is a magnet for tourists and the home of the country's steel industry.

Acre was first founded  by either a Canaanite or a Phoenician Arab tribe known by al-Jar Jashyyein on Tel al-Fukhar, two kilometers East of the city.  For the Canaanites, Acre was known by 'Akkaw (meaning hot sand), which is derived from the Arabic word of 'Akk, meaning intense rubbing.
In 1945, the city covered an area of 1,538 dunums, of which 52 dunums were allocated for roads and railroads, and Zionists owned only 6 dunums of the total city size.
It should be noted that Acre's port and its regional importance had declined soon after the development of Haifa City and its port in the 1920s and 1930s.

In November, 1901 a newly appointed Superintendent of City Parks recommended as Commissioner Maize had earlier, that as a beginning, a 400 square foot area in the southwest, most convenient corner of City Park be graded and planted with trees, shrubs and lawns.
The paper recommended that a 10 acre school site be chosen on high land in the south part of City Park, not far from downtown but away from the fire dangers of built up areas and provided with healthy air and fine views.
