Acre is inhabited by various indigenous groups of the Panoan language family, including Kashinawa, Jaminawa and Xanenawa.
Acre is best known for being the home of the world's first ecomartyr, the rubber tapper Chico Mendes, who was murdered at the orders of powerful cattle ranchers in 1988.

State and Rose Acre officials earlier had reached an impasse over the Division of Water Quality's determination that a federal permit would be required for such a large operation.
State officials have indicated that an operation as large as Rose Acre is proposing is a first for the state and, essentially, may be breaking new regulatory ground for the state.
