It is important to note that we should put the label acritic to songs that describe specific heroes of the regional aristocracy and not to just any song, regardless of content, born in a frontier region.
Precursors to the acritic songs are thought to be the bylines, Russian epic songs, attached to the oral tradition.
Guy Saunier, Professor at the Sorbonne, who holds the acritic songs to be a subcategory of Greek heroic folksongs, illuminates the symbolic aspect of some of the protagonists of the acritic cycle.

The most significant secular movement was that of the troubadours, who arose in the south of France in the late 11th century.
The troubadours were often itinerant, came from all classes of society, and wrote songs on a variety of topics, especially courtly love.
Their style went on to influence the trouvères of northern France, the minnesingers of Germany, and the composers of secular music of the trecento in northern Italy.

These characteristics and the same composition technique are shared as well by the oldest known narrative song ‘Daskalojannis’, which tells the story of a rebellion of the Cretans in Sfakiá in 1770, in an epic of 1034 lines written down shortly afterwards, as by the shorter and more recent compositions.
These songs are short (on the average just ten lines), mainly composed in the dekapentasíllavo metre, unrhymed and extremely crystallised in their form and poetics.

Eras of Elegance - Art, Literature and Music in the Medieval Era
During the middle period of the Medieval era, the music of the troubadors and trouvères was a vernacular tradition of monophonic secular song, probably accompanied by instruments, sung by professional, occasionally itinerant, musicians who were as skilled as poets as they were singers and instrumentalists.
The language of the troubadors was Occitan (also known as the langue d'oc, or Provençal); the language of the trouvères was Old French (also known as langue d'oil).
The period of the troubadors ended abruptly with the Albigensian Crusade, the fierce campaign by Pope Innocent III to eliminate the Cathar heresy (and appropriate the wealth of a defenseless people) which effectively exterminated the entire civilization.

 Medieval literature Summary
The subject of "courtly love" became important in the 11th century, especially in the Romance languages (in the French, Spanish, Provençal, Galician and Catalan languages, most notably) and Greek, where the traveling singers—troubadors—made a living from their songs.
The writings of the troubadors are often associated with unrequited longing, but this is not entirely accurate (see aubade, for instance).
The Song of Roland and Digenis Acritas) which deal with the Matter of France and the Acritic songs respectively, courtly romances in the tradition of the roman courtois which deal with the Matter of Britain and the Matter of Rome achieved great and lasting popularity.

The problem, for today's performer, is that ornamentation is one of those elements that varies from period to period and from country to country; indeed, it varied with the taste of the person writing about it.
Among melodies, some songs are more agreeable than others, although all are equally well modulated.
A voice that is douce and supple will decorate its songs with ornaments that are agréable; a voice that is emotional and strong will animate its songs with intonations that convey passion.
