actinide series. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
It is known, however, that all members of the series resemble actinium and each other in their chemical properties and that they have a strong chemical resemblance to their homologs in the lanthanide series.
The actinides are reactive and assume a number of different valences in their compounds.
Elements with atomic numbers greater than 103 are not members of the actinide series; element 104 (rutherfordium) is the first of the transactinide elements.

 Actinide Summary
Other isotopes of the actinide elements that have found application are Pu-238 which is used to power heart pacemakers and space instrumentation, americium-241 which is used in smoke detectors, and californium-252 which is used in analytical techniques that involve production of isotopes of other elements by neutron-capture.
The actinide series encompasses the 15 chemical elements that lie between actinium and lawrencium on the periodic table with atomic numbers 89 - 103.
The actinides display less similarity in their chemical properties than the lanthanide series, for instance exhibiting a wider range of oxidation states, which initially led to confusion as to whether actinium, thorium and uranium should be considered d-block elements.

 Actinide Research
The object of actinide research is the understanding of chemical bonding in, and the solid-state physics properties of, the actinide metals and their compounds.
The level of knowledge of actinides is far inferior to that of the rest of the periodic table, mainly because of the difficulty of handling transuranium materials, but also because of the inherent difficulty of understanding the behaviour of the 5f-electrons.
Studies of the actinide elements and compounds are motivated by the need to characterise their structural and thermodynamic properties for the development of nuclear fuels and the treatment of waste, whether it be long-term storage or ideas involving transmutation in high-powered accelerators or fast reactors.

Actinides are a significant factor in repository analyses.
Thus, by eliminating actinides that require disposal with spent nuclear fuel, the radiotoxicity of the waste is reduced.
Additionally, reducing the long-lived actinides simplifies the fate and transport analysis and eliminates the need to calculate doses for hundreds of thousands of years.

Actinide nitride-fueled reactor and continuous method of operating the same (US4234383)
An actinide nitride-fueled nuclear reactor and a method of operation therefor, including continuous in situ removal of fission products and optional addition of fuel-forming actinide material as the reaction proceeds.
Fission products formed are continuously exchanged with the actinide metal dissolved in the molten metal solvent as the nuclear reaction proceeds, with equivalent amounts of actinide nitride being formed and precipitated into the critical mass as fission products are dissolved in the molten metal solution.
Temperature excursions tend to be suppressed by the nitride decomposition which ensues as temperatures are increased without any balancing increase in nitrogen pressures to restore the equilibrium.

 Actinide-Recovery Method for Large-Soil Samples
There is a need to measure actinides in environmental samples with lower and lower detection limits, requiring larger sample sizes.
This method is somewhat tedious, however, requiring elution of the actinides from the Diphonix Resin using 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-dipohosphonic acid (HEDPA) extractant, which must be destroyed via a manual hot plate digestion prior to further analysis of the actinides.
The microwave-digestion method effectively removes the actinides from the resin and the soil matrix is essentially eliminated.
