 Actinide Research
The object of actinide research is the understanding of chemical bonding in, and the solid-state physics properties of, the actinide metals and their compounds.
The level of knowledge of actinides is far inferior to that of the rest of the periodic table, mainly because of the difficulty of handling transuranium materials, but also because of the inherent difficulty of understanding the behaviour of the 5f-electrons.

 Rapid Actinide Column Extraction Methods for Bioassay Samples
The advantage of this approach is that actinides can be loaded onto two separate resins in a single load step with simultaneous extraction and assay of neptunium and plutonium with high chemical recovery and excellent removal of matrix interferences.
A new SRS fecal method recovers actinides from large fecal samples in a small volume of nitric acid with minimal phosphate that can be easily loaded onto small extraction chromatography columns for rapid separation and analysis.

Fission products formed are continuously exchanged with the actinide metal dissolved in the molten metal solvent as the nuclear reaction proceeds, with equivalent amounts of actinide nitride being formed and precipitated into the critical mass as fission products are dissolved in the molten metal solution.
Temperature excursions tend to be suppressed by the nitride decomposition which ensues as temperatures are increased without any balancing increase in nitrogen pressures to restore the equilibrium.

 Actinide-Recovery Method for Large-Soil Samples
There is a need to measure actinides in environmental samples with lower and lower detection limits, requiring larger sample sizes.
This method is somewhat tedious, however, requiring elution of the actinides from the Diphonix Resin using 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-dipohosphonic acid (HEDPA) extractant, which must be destroyed via a manual hot plate digestion prior to further analysis of the actinides.
The microwave-digestion method effectively removes the actinides from the resin and the soil matrix is essentially eliminated.
