New Temperate Fruits: Actinidia chinensis and Actinidia deliciosa
The kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa [A. Chev.] C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson, Actinidiaceae) is one of the very few temperate fruit crops to have been domesticated this century.
Botanically, the fruits of the various Actinidia species are all defined as berries in that they are fleshy, they have many seed embedded in the flesh, and they do not split open at maturity.
Almost all the kiwifruit cultivars grown in commercial orchards outside of China are descended from two female plants and one male plant, themselves derived from a single introduction of seed to New Zealand in 1904 (Ferguson and Bollard 1990).

MOLECULAR APPROACHES TO SYSTEMATICS OF ACTINIDIA
Taxonomic relationships among some twenty Actinidia were analyzed using isozyme polymorphism (82 alleles at 15 loci) and restriction fragment length polymorphism of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) (146 restriction fragments in four PCR-amplified cpDNA regions (rbcL and psbA genes and two spacers flanking the trnL gene).
Both alleles and restriction fragments were coded for presence or absence and the sets of data were explored by UPGMA analysis based on distance values between pairs of species.
Since chloroplast DNA is paternally inherited in Actinidia chinensis must be the paternal, if not the only, progenitor of A.

Kiwifruit only came under cultivation in the 20th Century.
Actinidia chinensis was once mainly known as Chinese Gooseberry but through marketing by New Zealand fruit growers, it is now known as Kiwifruit which is actually quite a good name because its furry, round shape is reminiscent of the appearance of a Kiwi.
The name change also reflects its history because it is indigenous to southeastern China but it was the New Zealanders that developed cultivars and marketed it.
