  Actinomyces naeslundii Summary
Members of the genus Actinomyces are normal residents of the mouth, throat, and intestinal tract.
The pus, which is composed of dead bacteria, is granular, because of the presence of granules of sulfur that are made by the bacteria.
Actinomyces naeslundii are Gram positive rod shaped bacteria that occupy the oral cavity.

Actinomyces are very closely related to Nocardia species, and, at one point in time, both were considered to be fungal organisms.
Actinomyces grow well in enriched media with brain-heart infusion and may be aided in growth by an atmosphere of 6-10% ambient carbon dioxide.
In general, Actinomyces species, being members of the normal flora, are agents of low pathogenicity and require disruption of the mucosal barrier to cause disease.

Actinomyces bovis is not found in humans and, to date, the other species described from animals, with the exception of A pyogenes, have not been found in human specimens.
Actinomyces and P propionicus are not found in the soil or on vegetation.

Actinomyces taxonomy is based to a large degree on serological reactions (11), and fimbriae are an important factor in bacterial antigenicity.
Although actinomyces cells that reacted with one or with both of the appropriate antibodies were readily discernible, their frequency of occurrence was low on the chips at 4 h and remained low at 8 h (Fig.
Actinomyces, as detected by anti-type-2 and anti-type-1, were infrequent at 4- and 8-h time points, but cells labeled with these antibodies were easier to find at the 8-h time point.

Susceptibility of biofilms of Streptococccus sanguis and Actinomyces naeslundii to chlorhexidine
Single species and two species biofilms comprising Streptococcus sanquis and Actinomyces naeslundii were established in order to determine the susceptibility to chlorhexidine of the bacteria growing in biofilms compared to planktonic growth, and when growing in single species biofilms compared to mixed biofilms.
naeslundii in the mixed biofilm were attained after 24 h while each of the bacteria required 48 h for formation of single species biofilms of comparable cell numbers (Larsen and Fiehn, 1995), indicating that the two species are of mutual benefit to each other during colonization.

An adjuvant effect of in vivo plaque accumulation was manifested by the enhancement of T lymphocytes in the mixed leucocyte culture reaction and of B lymphocytes, as shown by the increased response to lipopolysaccharide.
The Actinomyces strains were recovered in two phena; the first contained Actinomyces israelii and the other facultative anaerobic Actinomyces, including subclusters equal to taxospecies of A. odontolyticus and A. viscosus/A. naeslundii, while the other phenon corresponded to the genera Arachnia, Actinobacterium, Bifidobacterium and Propionibacterium.

Objectives: Actinomyces naeslundii (A. naeslundii) is a common bacterium assocaited with periodontal diseases and, occlusal and root surface caries.
As the accuracy of biochemical identification is easily affected by both the biochemical and physiological similarity shared by different Actinomyces species, and the unstablity of biochemical properties in some species, using a probe of DNA sequence of 16S rRNA to detect A. naeslundii appears feasible, as the latter is highly conserved.
A total of 20 strains of Actinomyces spp., comprising A. naeslundii (6), A. viscosus (3), A. israelii (5), A. bovis (2), A. meyeri (2), and A. odontolyticus (2) were used to test specificity of the probe.
