  Film Genres
Musical/dance films are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way (usually with a musical or dance performance integrated as part of the film narrative), or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.
War films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film.
All films have at least one major genre, although there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four overlapping genre (or sub-genre) types that identify them.

 Action Scores in the '90s
I can't imagine an action film that is essentially a character study or a mood piece because action does not lend itself to such intimate studies.
Film music has a few more gauges than concert—you can't bury the dialogue, you must avoid sound effects, you must find or create some relevance with the scene—but as far as musical attributes go, clever is clever.
Action films have to have some complexity to them because the whole action premise is based on the immediate response of fight or flight.

 The Functions of Film Music
Such songs are really known as the film's soundtrack, while the orchestral music composed or used in a film is a film score, whether it was originally composed for the film or used in another context previously.
All film scores provide their respective films with one of these functions; even the worst scores, since, though they do not perfectly support the film, they are still scored with the intention of providing at least one of those functions.
In the film, Marianne Dashwood, has to play a piece of music on the piano, since in the film, her sister Elinor comments that it is her father's favorite piece of music.

 Action Films
Action films and adventure films have tremendous cross-over potential as film genres, and road films often overlap with action films.
Action films have traditionally been aimed at male audiences, ages 13 to the mid-30s in both American and world-wide markets.
Action films then expanded in the 80s and 90s, with the growth of special effects techniques and in response to jaded audiences who demanded faster plots (coherent or not), greater violence, and stimulation.

 film terminology
The Auteur theory insists that a film be considered in terms of the entire canon of a director and that each Auteur earns that title by displaying a unique cinematic style.
The action is ususlly simultaneous and used to create a dynamic tension as in the chase scene in D.W. Griffith's A Girl and Her Trust.
A scene is one of the basic structural units of film, with each scene contributing to the next largest unit of film, the sequence.

 cops80s
The 1980s was the zenith of the cop action film and the spectacle of the male body.
In these films, the male body functioned as the site for the expression and the working through of personal, and often national, trauma, and two stars that repeatedly performed the role of, and have to come to embody, the cop action-hero are Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis.
However, the emphasis on action, explosions, violence, and body counts diminished in the 1990s as social opinion changed in regards to what qualities were considered positive for masculinity to embody.

The Film Asylum - S.W.A.T film review
This is of course true of a lot of action films and isn't necessarily a big problem provided that a sensible story is wrapped around the parts that get the heart pounding and SWAT is a good example of this.
This is a Hollywood action film so it goes without saying that the action has to get increasingly more outrageous as the film goes on and as such the realism goes right out of the window.
The other problem this film faces is a pacing issue and, although starting off in an all action bank heist, it takes a good hour to actually get past the point where the new SWAT team is assembled and trained and start the story proper.

In a narrative film, all the events that we see and hear, plus all those that we infer or assume to have occurred, arranged in their presumed causal relations, chronological order, duration, frequency, and spatial locations.
This is particularly important in action sequences because the audience is psychologically intent on the moving images that a cut in the film -- an unobstrusive cut -- is not noticed.
At the beginning of a film, episode or scene within a film, a wide-angle or "full-shot" is photographed for the purpose of identifying the location or setting.

Bang!! The Triumph of the Action Film
Action films are, at heart, fantasies of motion, with a kind of unjaded purity.
The modern “art” film struggles to appropriate the conventions, the anxieties and thrills, of the action film (witness Gregg Araki’s The Doom Generation, one of the most “artsy” and self-conscious films in recent memory) while the action film flows seamlessly into art (e.g., “Beat” Takeshi’s Fireworks).
The genre itself is of fairly recent vintage, an incorporation of several moribund genres (the war film, the western, the gangster film, the cliffhanger serial) with some newer forms: modern sci-fi and nineties noir (a very different animal from its precursor).

 John Woo Biography
As a teenager, with borrowed film equipment, Woo and several of his friends began experimenting with the items and by the time he was 22 (with no formal film education, since he could not afford to go to a four-year college) Woo was making his own movies.
The film (or more specifically, a fight featuring a Freddy Kruger-like knived glove) was thought to be too violent (a problem Woo would and does encounter throughout his career) and was shelved for two years.
Of course, Woo is known for action, and this is where a great deal of the "new breed" of action directors (and some old veterans) get their "inspiration" for their action sequences.

I would love to say that it's the casting that makes the films so brilliant - and it's true, the casting is great - but a couple of these characters have been woefully miscast.
Iceman stood out for me, bringing an uncomfortable Backstreet Boy vibe to the role, and although his role in X2 is small, James Marsden just doesn't seem to have it in him to hold a commanding and authoritative position among the X-sters as Cyclops.

In film terms, this worthy warning might be translated: beware the legal thriller, 'based on' and 'true story.'
That this rather powerful picture manages to avoid most of the usual pitfalls (actor grandstanding, gross plot liberties, emotional manipulation), is testament to restrained but towering performances from the two leads, and the inescapable poignancy of the facts.
Which does separate this from the average courtroom drama - indeed, much of the action occurs outside the oak-panelled walls - but if legal chicanery isn't your thing, this long, talky film (expertly performed and driven though it is) will probably not be cause for conversion.
