More important was his line of action in the difficult question of the relation between monks and their bishop.
There is plenty of evidence to show that many bishops took advantage of their position to oppress and burden the monasteries in their diocese, with the result that the monks appealed to the pope for protection.
This action on Gregory's part undoubtedly began the long progress by which the monastic bodies have come to be under the direct control of the Holy See.

NONVIOLENT ACTION HANDBOOK: Nonviolence by Sanderson Beck
Unlike military action which strikes quickly and ruthlessly, nonviolent action is slow and deliberate with ample warning given to the opponents so that they can consciously decide how they wish to meet our confrontation.
In this sense, nonviolent action is not passive, nor is it a naive belief in converting the opposition, nor is it a "safe" method of protest, immune from repression.
In groups of three, people share their personal feelings about nonviolent action by responding to questions, such as "What are the qualities of nonviolence you personally hope to embody?" and "What is leading you to nonviolently protest?" Each person speaks in turn as the other two actively listen.

The Limits of State Action, by "Germany’s greatest philosopher of freedom," as F. Hayek called him, has an exuberance and attention to principle that make it a valuable introduction to classical liberal political thought.
It is also crucial for an understanding of liberalism as it developed in Europe at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Humboldt explores the role that liberty plays in individual development, discusses criteria for permitting the state to limit individual actions, and suggests ways of confining the state to its proper bounds.

Bakhtin Circle [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The hero's language is alien to the author and therefore ripe for objectification; the crucial category is the latter's exteriority.
Stress on this intonational dimension allows the encounter of the two consciousnesses to be spoken about in phenomenological rather than linguistic terms and therefore allows Bakhtin to counter what he calls 'theoreticism', the tendency to consider the inner meaning of an action and its historical specificity in isolation from each other.
This might include Hegel's tendency to view the particular incident as meaningful only as an instance of the unfolding of reason, Husserl's sublation of inter-subjective relations in transcendental subjectivity or the positivistic assumption that categorisation of a phenomenon is sufficient to explain that phenomenon.
