In ACT's first five years, the pair envisage a rolling barrage of town and village meetings, local gatherings and all the groundwork that will be needed to create a national network of involved, local campaigners working around their manifesto.
Secondly, if ACT is to mean anything, it must be genuinely bottom-up; not a 'linear structure' of local groups answering to a head office, but an 'organic, living, growing' social movement, of which Secrett, Bailey and their team act merely as catalysts.
When ACT is formally launched in Britain, in the 18th of October, we will begin to see what the response to all this is. Perhaps ACT's most crucial initial challenge will be to convince people that this really is something different.

At the same time, as this transformation, or re-synthesis, is happening, most of us who have grown up in the Mennonite Church feel a strong connection to those roots and, in most cases, many of the foundational principles of the faith.
These historical allusions are not referenced to immediately validate our concerns as dynamic ones of potential transformation for the Mennonite trajectory, but to pose a challenge to the widely shared tendency to invalidate the voice of young adults as simply too idealistic.
As we strive to transform the model of young adult convention, we hope that the adult convention can begin to respect us as an essential contributor to the gathered body of truth-seeking sisters and brothers by which we have come to define the church.

It was argued that such a focus produced a limited notion of citizenship, according to which a good citizen was someone who understood the structure and function of government and who was aware of, and practised, their role within that formal structure.
The Committee defined a citizen 'as one whose activity is circumscribed by the existing structures of government, who is in a position to approach government, offer views, and press cases, but not to demand rights, protest, litigate or campaign directly.
A survey of students' perceptions of what it is to be a 'good citizen', conducted in 1994, asked 11-12 year old and 15-16 year old students to convey their views about characteristics of a 'good citizen'.(43) The findings challenged the view that governmental knowledge is at the core of citizenship.

 Due Diligence: Citizens' Media
Over at Winds of Change, I've been going on about an idea I call citizens' diplomacy, which in its simplest form is the observation that the cross-border conversations we have begun in the blogosphere will end by having a large impact on war or peace worldwide.
I can't help but wondering how much of the failing of pre-election and exit polls was due to citizens who had finally reached their limits with the arrogance of the legacy media, and decided to do a little ad hoc retaliation by way of poisoning the information wells.
In the clearest demonstration to date of the power of citizens' media, dozens to hundreds of experts ranging from typography to antique typewriters to military lexicons and document formatting spontaneously organized and seem to have soundly beaten the research capabilities and judgment of a major mass media organization.

It also acts as a window on the different regions and cultures of the country and of the world, allowing citizens who might live thousands of kilometres apart to become more familiar with one another’s concerns and predicaments.
At the same time, news coverage which fails to address citizens’ substantive concerns and which portrays politics simply as conflict among personalities may erode citizens’ regard for the political process as a whole and discourage their participation in it.
The more that citizens are tuned in to separate specialty channels, the less common ground they will share, and the less able they will be to participate in a meaningful debate about shared goals and values.
