Active camouflage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Active camouflage has its origins in the diffused lighting camouflage first tested on Canadian Navy corvettes during World War II, and later in the armed forces of the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Active camouflage is rumored to have taken a new turn with the development of the Boeing Bird of Prey, which apparently took the technology further.
Active camouflage is poised to develop at a rapid pace with the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and other technologies which allow for images to be projected onto irregularly-shaped surfaces.

Camouflage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Camouflage is the method which allows an otherwise visible organism or object to remain indiscernible from the surrounding environment.
The Bronze Horseman camouflaged from the German aircraft during the Siege of Leningrad (August 8, 1941).
Camouflage added to helmets was unofficially popular, but these were not mass-produced until the Germans began in 1916 to issue stahlhelme (steel helmets) in green, brown, or ochre.

Camouflage cream approved and NATO coded for Armed Forces use Worldwide
A non-irritant camouflage cream developed to meet the demands of the modern soldier for a cam-cream that is not messy or greasy and does not cause skin problems.
Caplock camouflage cream is not a cosmetic - it is a dedicated military camo face paint with sunscreen that is temperature stable from subzero to tropical conditions.
Face paint camouflage is contained in an impact resistant polypropylene compact with a hinged lid incorporating a lightweight mirror of metalized styrene and three camouflage cream colors.

Passive Air Defense: A Neglected Concept
Camouflage is much more difficult today with the various electronic, infrared and radar sensors which are not as easily fooled as the camera or naked eye.
Camouflage netting can hide a squadron command post from an enemy pilot traveling at 500 miles per hour; however, an infrared photograph will identify the netting as false vegetation and the electronic signature of the equipment and communications from the site will help determine what is under the netting.
Camouflage nets now exist which absorb and diffuse radar pulses, thereby masking the radar signature of whatever is beneath it.

 Motion camouflage
Motion camouflage is a stealth behaviour that allows a predator to conceal its apparent motion on approaching a moving prey.
The fixed point could be an existing landmark in the background (against which the shadower is camouflaged) or possibly the initial position of the shadower (in which case the shadower appears not to have moved from its starting point).
If the hoverflies and dragonfly flights are indeed instances of motion camouflage behaviour, it is not clear that the technique itself is being used offensively (though in the case of the hoverfly it may be a precursor to an offensive manoeuvre).

 What is Optical Camouflage?
Optical camouflage is a hypothetical type of active camouflage currently only in a very primitive stage of development.
Creating complete optical camouflage across the visible light spectrum would require a coating or suit covered in tiny cameras and projectors, programmed to gather visual data from a multitude of different angles and project the gathered images outwards in an equally large number of different directions to give the illusion of invisibility from all angles.
We may end up finding optical camouflage to be most useful in the environment of space, where any given background is generally less complex than earthly backdrops and therefore easier to record, process, and project.

 Active Camouflage - halowiki.net
The active camo is disrupted by firing weapons or taking damage, rendering the invisible player fully visible (although the cloak will re-establish itself in about two seconds).
While this is debatable, it should be noted that acquiring both the active camo and the Overshield simultaneously lessens the benefit of the cloak; the overshield's web of protection is visible outside of the cloak, which makes for an eerie sight that can only be described as...
Adding to that, a commmon thing to combine with the use of active camo is crouch walking, holding down the crouch button while moving, this way you move at the fastest possible speed that wont disclose your location on the motion tracker, and the active camo and ducking both help the stealth aspect.

 Halo 2 - Halopedia
Aside from variations caused simply by switching sides in the conflict, most notably The Arbiter is different from Master Chief in that his armor lacks a flashlight and is equipped with a short duration rechargeable form of Active Camouflage that will drop if an action other than movement is taken.
Active Camouflage: Drastically reduces the player's visibility for a period of time, making all but a faint outline of him transparent.
This effect is reduced if the player is hit by weapons fire, if he or she fires a weapon or throws a grenade, or in some cases if he or she switches weapons.

The uniform is being produced in a single, universal pattern to replace the two camouflage versions in current use: tan-brown for desert use and green-brown-fl for woodland settings.
The pattern for the new camouflage coat and trousers is a mix of light green, tan and gray.
Moran said it was designed to allow soldiers to blend into urban, desert and forest environments; it is similar to the Marines' digital camouflage uniform except that it has no fl in the pattern.

 Motion Illusions & Active Camouflage
Several different active camouflage strategies are discussed, including minimisation of apparent motion, and percepts of accelerated or retarded velocity.
The pursuer is using motion camouflage to mimic a stationary object positioned at the point of convergence of the constraint lines.
The importance of a camouflage system matching the optical background is well known, but the interaction with the visual processing pathway of the observer is often overlooked.

Strategies for Active Camouflage of Motion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
It is shown that, under certain conditions, the shadower can conceal its motion if it moves along a trajectory such that it emulates the optic flow produced by a stationary object, as viewed by the moving shadowee.
Algorithms for determining trajectories which enable the shadower to camouflage its motion whilst tracking a shadowee, or whilst moving towards a stationary or moving target, are developed and tested.
It is of interest to investigate the relevance of active motion camouflage in contexts such as 'shadowing' behaviour in hoverflies, capture of prey by predators and military manoeuvres.

 Informat.io on Halo
Active Camouflage: Essentially a device used for stealth by The Covenant, active camouflage drastically reduces the player's visibility for a period of time, making all but a faint outline of him invisible, and producing a lensing effect as they walk.
The ability to use active camouflage is included in the Arbiter's part of the campaign, although its effect only lasts a few seconds and suffers from the same problems as noted above.
During multiplayer, you cannot use active camouflage as the Arbiter does during the campaign, but instead must find it placed on the map. When the camouflage is activated, enemies' reticles will not turn red, thus making it difficult for enemies to snipe you, and also the charged plasma pistol shot will not home in on you.

 ANU - MAC - MEDIA - MEDIA RELEASES - 2003 - 030605DRAGONFLIES
In the dragonfly world, motion camouflage is most likely used by a male to ‘shadow’ a prospective mate, or to pursue, in stealth, a food item such as a fly.
Dr Mizutani and her colleagues discovered it was likely the shadowing dragonfly uses all three types of motion camouflage – appearing to be a static object that is either in front of, or behind the shadower, or an infinite distance away from the shadowee.
However, it is certain that the flight patterns are motivated by motion camouflage “and are not an artefact or by-product of another behaviour”.

 The Future
Carefully designed conventional camouflage worked well enough under most circumstances to ensure that an aircraft would not be visible before a radar could detect it.
It does not use an "active camouflage" lighting system, but it may have an upward-facing light sensor that tells the pilot when to increase or reduce altitude slightly to match the changing luminance of the sky
Yehudi's inventors needed a way to make the aircraft harder to see, and they realised that camouflage paint wouldn't do the job: Regardless of its colour, the aeroplane would be a fl dot against the sky.

Author of 'The Development of Naval Camouflage 1914-1945' Alan Raven says that the first really successful ship camouflage is attributable to the dazzle patterns invented by artist Norman Wilkinson in about 1917.
Dazzle camouflage was an 'inclination' deception technique that involved the fore part of one side and the aft part of the other side being painted a dark colour.
The post-war period saw interest in naval visual stealth and camouflage declined further, although one USN initiative is worth analysis.
