 Power Factor Correction Concepts
Power factor is the ratio of Active Power (W) to the Apparent Power (VA) (Figure 1).
The leading power factor on the first ballast, in conjunction with the lagging power factor of the second ballast, brings the total power factor to near unity.
This Apparent Power (VA) has two components; one is the Active Power (W) actually being consumed by the lamp for illuminating it, and the other is the Reactive Power (VAr) feeding the electromagnetic circuit of the control gear.

 Power Factor Correction
Power factor correction is a term applied to the misalignment of the phase angle of the sine wave between input and output voltage and current.
Power factor does not affect how much "power" - energy - you actually use and the way it's written is misleading, as it seems to say you use less power when you use a PSU with an active PFC.
It is less powered because the current and voltage phases are not in alignment, thus leading or lagging phases require correcting before they are useful.

 Active PFC (Power Factor Correction)
Active Power Factor Correction also markedly diminishes total harmonics, automatically corrects for AC input voltage, and is capable of a full range of input voltage.
Because Active PFC uses a circuit to correct power factor, Active PFC is able to generate a theoretical power factor of over 95%.
Passive PFC uses a capacitive filter at the AC input to correct poor power factor.

 Power Factor Correction Capacitors
Power factor is the relationship between working (active) power and total power consumed (apparent power).
When low power factor is not corrected, the utility must provide the nonworking reactive power in addition to the working active power.
By supplying their own source of reactive power, the industrial user frees the utility from having to supply it; therefore, the total amount of apparent power (kVA) supplied by the utility will be less.

KEPCO INC: REAL/APPARENT POWER AND POWER FACTOR
Power supplies with active power factor correction (PFC) include the Kepco ABC (100W), MST (200W), RCW (350, 750 and 1500W), RKW (50, 100, 150, 300, 600 and 1500W), HSP (1000 and 1500W), BOP High Power (1000 and 2000W) and HSM (1000 and 1500W).
Although the voltage and current are in phase with each other, the power factor can differ from the unity value that two sinusoidal waveforms would produce.
Real power is mathematically determined by dividing time into a very large number of small segments and multiplying the instantaneous voltage present in each time segment by the instantaneous current flowing and averaging the results.

Active Power Filters Provide a Cost- Effective, Flexible Solution for System Harmonic Control
Because APF correction is accomplished parallel to the AC line, it only needs to correct for the combined reactive currents, which may be as little as 15 to 20% of the actual load in the same 1,000 W system.
For existing nonlinear loads, near unity power factor can be achieved by simply connecting an APF device in parallel with the AC inlet.
This reduces the percentage of current that must be injected by the APF to cancel reactive currents, and results in efficiencies that may exceed 95%.
