Acton is now principally residential, though it maintains some light industry: particularly in the north east in the Park Royal area, and the south near the border with Chiswick.
Acton lies on the former main road between London and Oxford and several inns along it date back several centuries as stopping places for travellers.

CULG - Hammersmith & City Line
Initially the line ran into the two westernmost platforms of the GER mainline station (then numbered 12 and 11, but now 1 and 2), but it was diverted on to its present route as part of the continuing drive to complete the Inner Circle (see the Circle Line page).
The Great Northern Railway had just been opened, using a temporary station at or near the present site of King's Cross, and the plan was for an underground line of 8 tracks from there southeast, under a newly built road, to a large station complex at more or less the present Farringdon station.
The lines were extended westwards by the LSWR on 1848-08-22, and the station was replaced by a new one on the through lines (at the present location) during 1849-09.

Casebook: Jack the Ripper - The Birth of London's Underground
It was almost a case of electrification or die, for as steam lines their position was deteriorating rapidly in the face of competition from the recently-opened tube railways.
It was as if the authorities wished to wipe the memories of steam trains from the minds of their passengers, for stations and tunnels were thoroughly cleaned of accumulated layers of soot and grime, and there was much repainting of both lines as soon as possible afterwards.
A plan was eventually evolved for an underground, steam-operated railway nearly four miles long between Farringdon Street and Bishop's Road, Paddington, following Farringdon Road and King's Cross Road to King's Cross, and then following the course of Euston Road, Marylebone Road and Praed Street to Paddington.
