Topic: Actually (album)

In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

  Actually
Actually is the third album, the second of entirely new music, by the UK electronic music group Pet Shop Boys.
Actually housed four singles, including lead-off single "It's a Sin" and "What Have I Done to Deserve This?", a duet with fellow Parlophone artist Dusty Springfield.
Actually was rereleased in 2001 (as were most of the group's albums up to that point) as Actually/Further Listening 1987-1988.

Ultimately this album succeeds in delivering 'pop' exactly as it should be, but played too often it will begin to grate on your friends, as you will end up humming it all day and drive them to despair.
Actually is an unusual album; confirming that the boys could sound utterly contemporary and yet suggest more depth than the usual PWL type stuff that was around at the time.
Actually is often said to be the band at the peak of their career; In terms of sales, I'd agree.

A great album, not as great as some would have you believe, not as BAD as those complaining that the singles from this record are played on MTV and the radio so often as to reach the point of throwing up if you hear 'In Bloom' just one more time.
I think this is a pretty good album, I absolutely love Bleach and I think it's easily one of the greatest albums of the last 20 years.
I think that this is one of the cornerstones of the whole album and it could have made a fine single, if the dwarves who fucked with Steve Albini's production hadn't put their stubby fingers into the mix.

 Attitude - Album Reviews
The layout of the album suggests that it may be a concept album and certainly the style of material on offer would back this up.
This is not an album I would play at a club or party as it is not very energetic, although the last songs add more speed to it.
Musically they actually have a fairly good base to build upon with some enjoyable riffs, but it just isn't quite there if you know what I mean.

 Adrian's Album Reviews : Coldplay
The string arrangements throughout this album are impressive actually, although never over-done for one second, and the songs certainly don't rely on them, are just enhanced by them, which is how it should be, of course.
Sure the album falls down a bit in the mid section, but some of the songs on here are fantastic.
Actually, a lowlight and a highlight arrive right together at the end of the album.

Yeah, Celine Dion asked that question on two successive albums, but you've gotta admit, love is the happiest, most inspiring emotion there is. It causes people to say things they wouldn't normally say and do things they wouldn't normally do.
While probably the least exciting of the album's tracks, this track shows Warren trading in her usual bombast for a slightly more mellow approach.
This album also revisits some older tracks, which end up being the best things on the album.

Their second album shows Tennant's tiny speak-singing voice going more traditionally melodic, but yet working as a mere channel to the transmission of words, even if it also projects comfort.
This album offers a much more focused songwriting then that of their also very good debut, and there is a lot of fun and hits to enjoy here: their first UK #1 'Heart', the lush midtempo 'Rent' and the bombing megahit 'It's A Sin'.
The rest of the songs match the melodic and lyric quality of the choosed singles and, as a whole, this album works of an explanation to the question "Why the f**** are there so many bands immitating and re-processing typical 80's synthpop?".

 Actually and Introspective
The album title, incidentally, was reportedly chosen simply because it was a word that they (Neil in particular) used quite a lot—again an instance of calculated flippancy, which would prove a recurring motif in the Boys' career.
This track, recorded and originally released by Dusty Springfield on her album Reputation, was written by Neil and Chris for the film Scandal, which concerned the notorious Profumo Affair.
Yet it was enough to cause an uproar in the press, to rattle the government, and to cause one of the central figures in the affair to kill himself.

This is certainly true on the four-part "Antiwar Requiem", which spans the album's first side: "Dies irae" greets the listener with a brusque drummachine beat in military mode and wave upon shrill, dissonant saw wave from the upper register of Varga's Roland Jupiter 8, sort of like a grim call-to-arms fanfare heralding a total war.
Actually that description is really superficial, VDO are much more talented and although their songs are album length, the music is quite good.
Actually, album was totally overlooked, as also old thrashfans of the band didn’t like it and turned their backs to the band.

But not an album very likely to be discussed with your friends when you all get talking about great albums you could possibly listen to.
I always wanted an album that really WAS 'just a noise', so I could throw that album in such a persons face when they dared to say something as melodic and brilliant as, say, Polvo, was 'just a noise'.
'Street Hassle' is a strange album altogether, with live tracks forming the basis for a good half of the album, an eleven minute long title track and the LP released as punk was raging around him.

 Planet Mellotron Album Reviews: D2
Much of the album is laid-back folk/prog, but when the band let rip, as on the sax-driven Culto Disarmonico, they display interesting jazz sensibilities that are quite out of kilter with the rest of their material.
Ironically, the album actually starts quite well, with the instrumental Passage sounding slightly like an IQ outtake, although the temptation to stray into Pendragon territory obviously overcame them mere minutes into the record.
It's actually quite eccentric in places, which has to be a good thing, as the entire music industry slowly suffocates under the weight of the identikit drivel it spews out at an unthinking public.

of excess and indulgence after his several excellent albums of singer/songwriter folk-rock.
What should be kept in mind, however, is that Stevens's peers in 1973 were acts like Jethro Tull and Yes that were penetrating the top of the charts and selling millions of records while creating elaborate musical suites, and that they in turn were taking their cue from Abbey Road and Tommy.
Actually, the suite is full of compelling melodic sections and typically emotive singing that could have made for an album side's worth of terrific four-minute Cat Stevens songs if only he had composed them that way.

In December, when he heard Jay-Z was releasing an a cappella version of The Black Album for remixers, he came up with a crazy idea to blend it with the Beatles' famous The White Album and make The Grey Album (see "Remixers Turn Jay-Z's Black Album Grey, White And Brown").
As the album has become a cultural landmark, though, Burton has felt a need to explain the process behind it.
Most of the songs on the The Grey Album use guitar and/or vocal samples from only one Beatles tune, although the beats are all from various songs from The White Album.

Like its stable mates, Love Actually is a feel good film and tells of the loves and lives of eight different couples, but mostly their loves; falling in and falling out.
