  PlanetMath: acyclic graph
A directed acyclic graph is often called a DAG for short.
For example, the following graph and digraph are acyclic.
This is version 5 of acyclic graph, born on 2002-03-02, modified 2002-03-02.

Directed acyclic graph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer science and mathematics, a directed acyclic graph, also called a dag or DAG, is a directed graph with no directed cycles; that is, for any vertex v, there is no nonempty directed path starting and ending on v.
DAGs appear in models where it doesn't make sense for a vertex to have a path to itself; for example, if an edge u→v indicates that v is a part of u, such a path would indicate that u is a part of itself, which is impossible.
Every directed acyclic graph has a topological sort, an ordering of the vertices such that each vertex comes before all vertices it has edges to.

Upward Planar Drawing of Single Source Acyclic Digraphs - Hutton, Lubiw (ResearchIndex)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Abstract: A upward plane drawing of a directed acyclic graph is a straight line drawing in the Euclidean plane such that all directed arcs point upwards.
We present an efficient algorithm to test whether a given single-source acyclic digraph has a plane upward drawing and, if so, to find a representation of one such drawing.
Since the graph G is acyclic, we have a planar representation of G so that all edges are directed downward (see e.g.

Rule A-3. Unsaturated Compounds and Univalent Radicals (ACYCLIC HYDROCARBONS)
3.1 - Unsaturated unbranched acyclic hydrocarbons having one double bond are named by replacing the ending "-ane" of the name of the corresponding saturated hydrocarbon with the ending "-ene".
When, in cyclic compounds or their substitution products, the locants of a double bond differ by unity, only the lower locant is cited in the name; when they differ by more than unity, one locant is placed in parentheses after the other (see Rules A-31.3 and A-31.4).
If there are two or more chains competing for selection as the chain with the maximum number of unsaturated bonds, then the choice goes to (1) that one with the greatest number of carbon atoms; (2) the number of carbon atoms being equal, that one containing the maximum number of double bonds.

The World Market for Halogenated Derivatives of Acyclic Hydrocarbons Containing Two or More Different Halogens: A 2005 ...
I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports.
The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year.
Combined, Chapters 3 and 4 present the complete picture for imports and exports of halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens to and from all major countries in the world.

 BNGenerator
Bayesian networks are popular representations for uncertainty; the idea is to use a directed acyclic graph and a collection of conditional probability distributions to represent a possibly complex joint probability distribution.
Our approach is to focus on each one of these problems separately; that is, we first generate a directed acyclic graph that is uniformly distributed in the space of graphs under consideration, then we generate a number V that is uniformly distributed within some interval, and then we randomly generate the probability distributions.
Now, our problem then is to generate uniformly distributed samples from the class of directed acyclic graphs with restrictions on node degree (or possibly, restrictions on the number of parents, number of children, number of arcs, etc).
