Topic: Adachi District

 [No title]
Adachi’s major achievements include extending vital social resources to the children of incarcerated parents and developing a clean-slate program that helps convicts overcome hurdles associated with their criminal records.
She’s the prime sponsor of the highly controversial redevelopment plan for her district, and while there are credible arguments on both sides of that issue, we don’t like the way she demonized her opponents, particularly Sup.
She thinks the district's public relations staff should be promoting the schools to prospective parents, not ballyhooing the goals or policies of the person in charge.

Usual Suspects - San Francisco's Political Homepage
Adachi's hyperbole and hypocrisy may be the last refuge of a desperate man: Adachi hasn't excited voters with compelling reasons why he should run the public defender's office, the last line of defense for the city's 20,000 people too broke to hire their own lawyer when they get in trouble.
Candidate Jeff Adachi has made his firing an issue in his challenge to unseat Public Defender Kimiko Burton, who fired him a year ago as chief assistant after she was appointed to replace Jeff Brown, who became a public-utilities commissioner.
To compare, Adachi's propensity was to take cases to trial for trial's sake and to train deputies for trial - an approach that may not be in the client's best interest.

An overlooked tidbit regarding the First District’s ruling against gay marriage: William McGuiness, author of the majority opinion, is on the ballot for retention this November.
Asked why Adachi feels the need to muster money for a campaign that is now a nonevent, the public defender said he still feels it important to ask the public for its vote.
But by today, thanks to a timely conversation with the district attorney’s right-hand man, SFPOA president Gary Delagnes was focusing his anger solely on the judges — and threatening to make it harder for them to keep their seats on the bench.

Law.com - Calif. Opinion on Oral Statements Stirs Defense Protests
The 3rd District's November decision concluded that defense and prosecution witnesses' oral statements before trial are subject to discovery, even if they weren't written down or taped.
The opinion is "consistent with the whole point of this concept we call reciprocal discovery," she said, noting that the law already required her prosecutors to hand over anything exculpatory.
The 3rd District opinion, by Justice Arthur Scotland, also warned that "counsel is not entitled to withhold any relevant witness statements from the prosecution by the simple expedient of not writing them down." Justices Richard Sims and Fred Morrison concurred.

Adachi successfully sold the theme that he, the prince-in-waiting, was cut down by the pretender to the throne.
The earliest indicator of Adachi's acumen in this sector was his ability, last November, to come close to garnering the 11,536 signatures necessary to defray the cost of the $2,800 campaign-filing fee.
The signatures also signified that Adachi clearly had the superior field operation, a fact further illustrated by his ability to place numerous campaign signs inside people's homes, not just on telephone poles and such - meaning his campaign had contacted the household, identified the residents as supporters, and delivered a campaign sign.

San Francisco's elected public defender, Jeff Adachi, endorsed District Attorney Terence Hallinan for re-election Tuesday and took aim at what has been a chief criticism of the incumbent -- the low rate of convictions in felony cases presented to Hallinan's office.
Joined by Hallinan at the Hall of Justice, Adachi said that the only way to increase the conviction rate -- a promise made by Hallinan's challenger, deputy city attorney Kamala Harris -- is to abandon the district attorney's commitment to rehabilitative diversion programs.
Adachi also questioned the link between conviction rate and what should be the ultimate goal of the criminal justice system -- improved public safety.
