Barber Adagio for Strings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Part of the piece's attraction comes from its dignified timelessness; despite its place in the 20th century, it could be mistaken for renaissance polyphony, due in no small part to the simplicity of structure and harmony that Barber employs.
The initial ascending phrase of the Adagio is developed as a canon through inversion and repetition; it is expanded and drawn out and has several smaller motifs added to it.
Part of the emotional mystery of the Adagio for Strings, which in part accounts for the attraction of the piece, is that it conveys both tranquility and grief.

Adagio doesn't have a specifc bpm indication, it's the composer's idea of how the music should FEEL, and the same tempo marking can mean different things to different composers.

For me, each arrangement of the piece takes on its own character: an intimacy in the string quartet version, an almost Old Testament passion in the version for massed strings.
