Tomaso Albinoni - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His "Adagio in G minor", actually a later reconstruction, is one of the most frequently recorded pieces of Baroque music.
The famous Albinoni Adagio in G Minor is a 1945 reconstruction by Remo Giazotto of a fragment from a slow movement of a trio sonata he discovered among the ruins of the State Library.
The Adagio in G minor has achieved a level of fame such that it is commonly transcribed for other instruments, and used in popular culture, for example as background music for films (Gallipoli, 1981) and television programs and in advertisements.

Adagio in G minor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adagio in G minor is a piece arranged by Remo Giazotto based on the fragments of a Sonata in G minor, composed by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni for strings and organ, which were found amongst the ruins of the old Saxon State Library, Dresden, which was bombed during World War II.
One example of a transcription is the recording of the Adagio by classical guitarist Dominic Miller, an Argentine born musician who tours with Sting.
The Doors 1978 album "An American Prayer" made use of the theme from the Adagio in G Minor.

Adagio actually means "at ease," "stretched out comfortably," or "take it easy!" The works on this album are Adagios in the best sense of the word: the melodic lines are long, the harmonies warm and voluptuously embracing, the pace is relaxed.
Ravel's Concerto in G, like his Concerto for Piano Left Hand (which was composed simultaneously), shows the influence of a craze for American popular music that swept France in the 1920's.
The majestic Adagio in G Minor is one of those pieces that has grown so popular that it tends to be identified simply by the name of its composer - as "the Albinoni." So it may be surprising to learn that only the repeating bass pattern is actually by that composer.

It is almost always a miracle when hungry people line up for bread and, while the line moves slowly, adagio in the language of music, angels tune up their voices and the bread divides.
We have a name for it, agoraphobia, fear of the sky and the place where fruit and vegetables are sold and sometimes women and children lined up for bread are scattered among the loaves and fishes and baskets of oranges, their hands and feet measured in pounds and ounces.
No wonder Smailovic, the cellist, trembled as he dressed in his white tie and tails, no wonder the Adagio in G minor had so much vibrato, every note played for someone who died in the line up for bread.

It was from this fragment that Giazotto reconstructed the now-famous Adagio, a piece which is instantly associated with Albinoni today, yet which ironically Albinoni would doubtless hardly recognize." So, it looks like what we hear today, has been arranged for the full orchestra by Giazotto.
First, the fragmentary quality, speaks of the broken nature of human folly and emotions in the modern world, its highs and lows, in the small and in the big, in individual form or in an organized mass.
The fullness of the emotions it explores, however briefly, surround the listener, and nothing is as good as a live performance of it, and one done by young aspiring musicians.

Much of his work was lost during the latter years of World War II with the bombing of Dresden and the Dresden State library – which brings us to the celebrated Adagio.
Only the bass line and six bars of melody had survived, possibly from the slow movement of a Trio Sonata or Sonata da Chiesa.

The Adagio in G Minor, attributed to Tomaso Albinoni in the early 1700's remains one of music's true mysteries.
From these fragments, of which only six or so bars remained intact, Giazotto constructed the Adagio that we know today as one of the most emotionally provacative orchestral classics.
Upon playing the FCBB's cut of the Adagio, he remarked he would never have attributed a piece with such gravity and somber tonality to Tomaso Albinoni.
