Austria’s declaration of war against Serbia marked the beginning of World War I. Emperor Franz Joseph dies in 1916 and after the end of the war in 1918 the first Republic of Austria was established, ending the 640-year old Habsburg dynasty.

After the Nazi Annexation of Austria, he was arrested and, from 1938 to 1939, was first in the Dachau concentration camp, and later in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
There he, together with Fritz Loehner Beda, composed the "Buchenwald Song" In 1942, Loehner Beda was murdered in Auschwitz, but Leopoldi, with the help of his wife's family, managed to leave Germany, and found a haven in the USA.
