Andreas Dahl, Johan Abraham and Leonard Gyllenhaal, Johan Afzelius, Daniel Naezén and Olof Knös founded on the 13th of December 1769, together with the parish priest and naturalist Clas Bjerkander, "The Swedish Topographic Society in Skara".
The specimens Dahl and Alströmer recived from Linnaeus and his son are now kept in the Linnean herbarium in Stockholm.
Dahl's friend from school, Adam Afzelius, who in 1785 was employed at the University of Uppsala, was working on a new edition of Linnaeus's Flora Svecica.

The early botanists were beset by difficulties and illness, and it is surprising that they managed to collect as many specimens as they did.
The German botanist Gustav Mann, who made extensive collections in Cameroon and the islands of the Gulf of Guinea between 1860 and 1863, acts as a link with the second phase of exploration, the period of the resident collector.
However, resourceful students (mainly Ken Adams) soon repaired the machine, and were rewarded with a fitting grand finale to Saturday's lectures.

Brown (1975) commented on seeing other specimens apparently from West Africa.
One from the Schönherr Collection in the Riksmuseet, deposited in 1848, had the lable "S. Leone/Afzelius", Adam Afzelius (1750-1838) had been a student of Linnaeus, who collected in or acquired material from Sierra Leone.
He, Brown, felt it might be the female of one of the two Santschi species (below).
