Adam Forkner, the man behind creative forces such as his bands Yume Bitsu and his most current project [[[[VVRSSNN]]]] (pronounced "version") took the time out of his peaceful Portland afternoon to answer some questions from me via e-mail.
Adam Forkner: I've been making music with other people as part of improvisational groups for a long time, since I was a kid playing jazz with my dad.
Adam Forkner: Our family of friends has dubbed this year the “Year of the Dolphin.” It all started on new years when we had a party in Los Angeles with one of those inflatable romper castles that was filled with inflatable toy dolphins for some random reason.

Adam Forkner: He has either been captured and Bush is waiting to reveal him closer to the election or he is dead, or he is hiding somewhere cool and being a total dick, or he's chillin' with George, Saddam and the rest of those fuckers down at Let's Fuck Up The World Cafe.

Adam Forkner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
White Rainbow is the moniker Forkner has used for all musical and artistic output since 2003.
In 2003 Forkner recorded the first White Rainbow album Zome with members of the band Landing_band.
A five-CD, one-DVD box set of Forkner's music and video collaborations was released in January of 2006 on Portland's Marriage Records.

 Pioneer Log
Upperclassmen Sean Barnett, Sandra Krussel, Joe Guest, Adam Forkner, Franz Prichard, and LC graduate Alex Luboff's house was damaged by a fire the night of Nov. 4, and in an unrelated incident, senior Jeff Flowers' car became victim to flames in front of Templeton Student Center on Nov. 7.
Forkner and Prichard had just driven away from their home to play a show at the Plattform with their band Yume Bitsu when the fire started.
Forkner said his girlfriend received the information by telephone from the residents on the scene, but did not relay the seriousness of the damage right away.

 K Artists
Yume Bitsu was co-founded in 1995 at a tiny liberal arts college in Portland Oregon in 1995 by Franz Prichard and Adam Forkner.
In early 1999, Forkner began working at a pro recording studio in Portland and the band recorded its self-titled follow up record during off-hours there, taking advantage of the high-tech equipment, 24 track recorder and many, many reverb devices.
Forkner's vocalizing becomes a more developed and stronger force, bringing the listener out of the drone-void just long enough to keep things interesting, and then let the guitars and keyboard washes take over again.

fakejazz: Adams and the Blackout - Live in Garfield (Ordnung)
I preface my review with these remarks because Adams and the Blackout is a funny band, or rather not a funny haha (and especially not a funny weird) group, but rather one whose entirety is suffused with good humor.
Highlighting the severe end of the band’s dual nature – bassist Lori Felker has long held that the live and recorded experiences are distinctly different, the former being a hulking Manthing, the latter clear, distinct and sharp, the only link between the two a compositional one – the recording is a sludgey, lo-fi affair.
As the incipient release on guitarist Adam Strohm’s Ordnung label, there are only a few of these left.

 indieworkshop.com | music: White Rainbow - ZOME
Created by Adam Forkner (of phenomenally underrated Yume Bitsu, Surface of Eceyon, and (VVRSSNN)), along with his Surface of Eceyon conspirators and members of Landing, these four songs create a slowly evolving and ever changing pool of sonic light.
What Adam Forkner has done is create several levels of sound, several "mantles" that he wears equally comfortably.
That is the real treasure in Adam Forkner's work is his innate ability to capture the perfect tone of sounds, whether it be a flanged guitar or an ancient drum machine.

Adam Forkner - "[[[[VVRSSNN]]]]"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Forkner seems to draw on all of the styles through Eno’s long career, then adds his own jazzy, dream pop leanings to the mix.
On Bruise Blood, Forkner sings in a lazy jazz-styled melody, while percussion and guitar pulses and throbs beneath his voice.
My only complaint about the album is that Forkner has a tendency to use some very harshly distorted electronic percussion in places, which works well in the more upbeat pieces, but tends to slightly mar softer pieces like Surface III or Shield of Invisibility.

Adam Forkner (of Yume Bitsu) sometimes little more than a mysterious silhouette, and at other times the crazy man of the band, was all over the stage.
Adam Forkner: I met Phil, the drummer, because he hired me as a temporary worker at a company.
Adam: The whole Dryystonian myth is something that Franz, the other prominent member of Yume Bitsu, has been working on, as far as a mythos and everything.

White Rainbow's ZOME is the first major release by Adam Forkner since his great [[[[VVRSSNN]]]] album and the first major release under the White Rainbow name.
It is a beautiful record that I have been wanting to release since it was recorded and am bursting at the seems now that Adam has finally okayed it.
Here is what Adam says about this album: "ZOME was recorded in the fall of 2003 with members of Landing in their attic studio as an audio love letter to my (at that point very new) eternal love vibe-partner Honey Owens.

As the title signifies, Forkner's approach to music-making has aspects in common with those used by reggae artists who create "versions," or variations of tracks and songs, by layering and stripping away various elements.
Much of the record was created with computerized technology, to be sure, but there's also a good deal of guitar and voice.
The synthetic beats might be the least impressive part of Forkner's arsenal, but they do keep the beats moving adequately in the more pop-driven segments without getting monotonous.

"Musician Adam Forkner, AKA White Rainbow, is at the forefront of Portland's experimental psychedelic movement.
His band World, which Forkner comprises with his partner Honey Owens, is a startlingly emotive and moving abstract ensemble that finds the duo alternately screaming, twiddling knobs, thumping tablas, and manipulating guitar feedback with an unnerving sense of control and architecture.

The minimalist environment provided by Forkner will evolve during the 11 days of its existence from psychedelic ecstasy to ambient drones, each sound meant to provide comfort to the listener.
Begun as a love letter composed while Forkner was on tour with the Dirty Projectors, this studio work is pure ambient pop, with sweet and loving vocals.
Forkner calls his relationship with partner Honey Owens “eternal love.” Each song meanders through abstract and breezy melodies, and steadies with calming, beautiful and animated pop structures.

 erasing clouds
Adam Forkner spends his time with Yume Bitsu, Surface of Eceyon and other groups making improvised rock-ish jams that attempt to blow your head wide upon.
On top of an ever-shifting foundation of electronics and guitar, Forkner croons pop songs that manage to be open-ended and ghostly while still feeling like catchy little pop songs.
But while constantly changing things around and keeping things fresh also obviously influences Forkner's approach here, as the entire album feels like a wave of sounds as much as a collection of songs, on another level Forkner spends much of the album crooning, like an old-fashioned vocalist (or Bobby Birdman).

Largely recorded on four-track with the help of friends in likeminded projects such as Wolf Colonel and Dear Nora, the album introduced Longstreth's distinctive, crooning voice and equally unique approach to arrangements and both lo-fi and hi-fi production.
Forkner helped record his next album, The Glad Fact, which was the first to bear the Dirty Projectors name and arrived on Western Vinyl in fall 2003.
This was followed quickly by Morning Better Last!, an album culled from three triple albums he recorded in 2001 and 2002; it was an Internet-only release on States Rights.

They stretched out on their backs and stared up at the ceiling, while Forkner stood on stage bathed in projection screen light—great rippling crayon-colored concentric circles—and played heavy, kaleidoscopic David Gilmour guitar lines.
