Guettel has big dreams for the musical theatre and, unlike the character of Floyd Collins, he is succeeding fully in achieving those dreams.
Guettel, in conjunction with his orchestrator Bruce Coughlin, divulged several lesser-known secrets about Floyd Collins, including the fact that the song "It Moves" was transcribed directly from notes that Guettel took while in Crystal Cave, the location of the real Floyd Collins' first caving expedition.
Guettel also treated us to several renditions of his own work including "Through the Mountain," "Daybreak," and "I Landed on Him." The attendees at the classes were the die-hard fans who either loved the show itself or Mr.

And I was one of those who found Guettel's sophisticated, showily avant-garde merger of blue grass and Mahler dull and even faintly ridiculous.
Guettel is unquestionably a proficient, well-trained composer and a talent to watch -- COLLINS made that much clear -- but the worshipful press he's received is premature.
Apropos of nothing, I should add that Guettel has an excellent singing voice and is, especially for a composer, quite the hottie...

Rodgers is Mary Rodgers -- yes, that Mary Rodgers, composer of the 1959 Broadway musical "Once Upon a Mattress." She is the daughter of Richard Rodgers, composer of two dozen Broadway shows, including "Oklahoma!" and "The Sound of Music." Mary Rodgers is Adam Guettel's mother.
When Guettel asked his mother to suggest a story that could serve as the basis for a romantic musical, she recommended Elizabeth Spencer's 1958 novella "Light in the Piazza," a tale of young love and middle-age malaise set in Florence, Italy.

It's no surprise when you learn that the composer, Adam Guettel, is the grandson of Broadway legend Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame).
Sixteen songs from that concert were selected for the CD that eventually became "Myths and Hymns." The songs were inspired by various Greek legends and songs Guettel found in a hymnal from a second-hand bookstore (who says God doesn't have a sense of humor).
For MaH, Guettel was able to draw some highly respected talent from the Broadway world such as Audra McDonald (Best Actress Tony for Ragtime, several solo CD projects) and Mandy Patinkin (several Broadway shows, the TV show Chicago Hope, and most famously Montoya in The Princess Bride).
