On April 28, 1898, the course of Barbados history was charted with the birth of Grantley Herbert Adams to Fitzherbert Adams and the former Rosa Frances Turney.
Grantley Adams was admitted to the Bar at Grey's Inn and functioned as a Counsel of Her Majesty, the Queen of England.
Grantley Herbert Adams was, without a doubt, a charismatic Caribbean leader who fought doggedly against oppressive colonial dictates for the economic advancement and political liberation of the Barbadian masses.

Herbert Baxter Adams (April 16, 1850 - 1901) was an American educator and historian.
Adams founded the "Johns Hopkins Studies in Historical and Political Science," the first of such series, and brought about the organization in 1884 of the American Historical Association.
Adams House, one of the undergraduate dormitories at Johns Hopkins University, is named in his honor.

Herbert Baxter, the youngest of the family, was born in Shutesbury April 16, 1850, educated in the public schools at Amherst and at Phillips Exeter Academy and was graduated at the head of his class at Amherst College in 1872.
Adams was always interested in efforts for the enlightenment of the masses and the amelioration of their condition; and I think that he must have been highly gratified when he received from Chancellor George William Curtis the Regents' prize of the University of the State of New York for the best monograph on university extension.
