Topic: Adam Ingram Labour politician

Points Of View (from The Herald )
DEFENCE Minister Adam Ingram, MP (Ingram calls for national debate February 26), is absolutely right that the British military often don't get the support they deserve.
Adam Ingram also pretends the debate is between the government and pacifists who won't consider any kind of military action.
And to think that there are those in the Labour Party who still believe that their government is wedded to something even remotely akin to socialism.

Ingram claimed that this was defamatory, and sued Galloway and his publisher to try to prevent the book being published.
In court, it emerged that Ingram had indeed been a member of the Orange Order and the judge ruled that the phrase "sectarian, anti-Catholic, protestant-supremacist" was fair comment on that organisation.
Ingram entered the Commons in the 1987 election, and in 1997 became a junior minister at the Northern Ireland Office.

I believe that Gerry Adams has had a similar impact on the development of the Provisionals and the peace process and I suspect that the real motive of those who make this criticism is their wish to deflect attention away from some of the unflattering light shed on Adams’s history.
Adams was scathing of the outcome and accused the SDLP, because it had endorsed the arrangement, of being the first Catholic partitionist party.

Although this is not the first time right wing politicians have tried to rewrite the shameful events of the 1930s, it cannot be said often enough that appeasement was not the work of people who opposed the war on pacifist grounds.
Unless Ingram is suggesting that Labour backbenchers not only sympathise with bin Laden politically, but have a massive financial interest in the continuation of Taleban rule in Afghanistan, then his comparison is preposterous.
Ingram later tried to play down his comments, but his references to Nazism and appeasement echoed reports of similar remarks by Hilary Armstrong, the Chief Whip, who also told one Labour MP that "War is not a matter of conscience.

Owing to the boundary changes, the Labour candidate in the new Glasgow Central constituency, which could have been his most likely chance, was his long-time friend Mohammad Sarwar, the first Muslim Labour MP and a strong opponent of the Iraq War; Galloway did not wish to challenge him.
Labour MP Tam Dalyell said during the controversy over whether Galloway should be expelled from the Labour Party that "in the mid-1980s there was only one MP that I can recollect making speeches about human rights in Iraq and this was George Galloway." [19].
Ingram asserted that Galloway's text that Ingram "played the flute in a sectarian, anti-Catholic, protestant-supremacist Orange Order band" was in bad faith and defamatory, although Ingram's lawyers conceded that for a year as a teenager he had been a member of a junior Orange Lodge in Barlanark, Glasgow, and had attended three parades.

The Scotsman - Scotland - Chances of beating Labour depend on just five seats
If, for example, it were to win the same share of the vote as Labour on the constituency and the regional vote (while all the other parties performed as well as in 2003) Labour would still have eight more seats than the SNP.
Interestingly if Labour lose just one constituency seat in say Glasgow, Central or West of Scotland, then they make no corresponding compensation on the list and their power bonus is reduced for little effort.
Why is this surprising, Labour created this system of government for the expressed purpose of keeping the SNP out of power - this is not an opinion, this was confirmed by Robin Cook.
