Estonian Baltic German Adam Johann Ritter von Krusenstern became a Russian admiral and explorer.
Under the patronage of czar Alexander I, Krusenstern led the first Russian circumnavigation of the world in 1803-1806, which aimed to establish trade with China and Japan, to facilitate trade in South America, and to examine California for a possible colony.
Two boats, Nadezhda (Hope) under command of Krusenstern, and Neva under command of captain-lieutenant Yuri F. Lisianski set sail from Kronstadt[?], rounded Cape Horn, and reached the northern Pacific.

Adam Johann Ritter von (knight of) Krusenstern (born November 19, 1770 in Hagudi, close to Rapla, Estonia (then a part of the Russian Empire), died August 24, 1846 in Kiltsi, Estonia) was the Russian admiral and explorer who in 1803-1806 led the first Russian circumnavigation of the Earth.
Krusenstern was born into a Baltic German family descended from the Swedish aristocratic family von Krusenstjerna, which remained in Estonia after the province was ceded to Russia.
The purpose of the two-ship expedition was to establish trade with China and Japan, facilitate trade in South America, and examine California for a possible colony.

The second son of August von Kotzebue, he was born at Reval (now Tallinn, Estonia), then part of the Russian Empire.
In this vessel, with only twenty-seven men, including the naturalists Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz and Adelbert von Chamisso, Kotzebue set out on July 30, 1815 to find a passage across the Arctic Ocean and explore the less-known parts of Oceania.

A physician and naturalist, Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff left the University of Göttingen to join the first Russian circumnavigation of the world, organized and led by Adam Johann von Krusenstern (in Russian, Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern, 1770—1846), a Baltic German nobleman from the province of Estland (present-day Estonia).
Like other explorers, von Langsdorff was struck by the practice of tattooing, which was widespread in the South Sea islands.
He regarded tattooing as a substitute for clothing, and the complex symmetrical tattoos as the natives’ counterpart to expensive clothing in Europe.
