FOW's Adam Schlesinger is slated to collaborate with Daily Show (and former Onion) writer David Javerbaum on songs for the new Broadway musical "Cry-Baby".
"Adam Schlesinger, to me, is somebody who understands that no matter whether you're writing for pop, for film, for theatre or for TV, that being clever and subversive in your storytelling is important," producer Epstein told Playbill On-Line.
Schlesinger was Oscar-nominated for Best Song for the title tune of the film, "That Thing You Do," and co-wrote the theme song for the movie, "Josie and the Pussycats." His credits also include contributions to "Crank Yankers," "Saturday Night Live," "There's Something About Mary" and more.

FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE - the ADAM SCHLESINGER in THE iZINE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Adam Schlesinger is remarkably cool, slightly cynical and awfully talented.
It took time and like all songwriters worth their weight in nuances, Schlesinger has his own philosophies as to what it took to lift he and Collingwood to the level of hazy two-and-a-half minute eloquence, wit and everydayness that fills the Fountains Of Wayne's debut.
Schlesinger would like to be back home writing more songs, one suspects, but he's really got one rule of thumb and he closes out with the simplest - and still most fundamental rule - of great pop music: "The music and melody should get you in, in the first place.

In 1991, Schlesinger left Massachusetts for New York (effectively dissolving his musical partnership with Collingwood), and by 1993, he was taken aboard as the bass player for the indie pop trio Ivy.
Impressed with what he heard, Schlesinger reunited with Collingwood and together they quickly proceeded to write a large batch of new songs that would become the basis for their new project, Fountains of Wayne.
Schlesinger has also appeared on a number of recordings by other artists, in the various roles of producer, songwriter, and performer.

Schlesinger sees his attitude as a defence mechanism, albeit one that'll keep his career afloat long after the semi-annual pop-dash-rock revival runs its course, which, at this rate, will never happen.

It was during this time period that Adam also submitted a song demo for an upcoming Tom Hanks film called "That Thing You Do." Much to everyone's disbelief, the song was chosen for the film, which subsequently happened to be released the same week as the FOW debut album.
Adam had known Jody for a while, and had actually filled in on bass during one short Belltower tour in the US, before that band broke up.

Yet the main focus here is on the way that Adam's managed to branch out into many different areas of songwriting.

The band, from Wayne, New Jersey, is the brainchild of vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger.
Schlesinger was the composer of the Beatlesque title song of the film "That Thing You Do," and the songs on the band's self-titled debut (all Schlesinger/Collingwood cowrites) update that tune's amiable power-pop quite agreeably.
The frothy pop hijinks are backed up by a keen sense of humor, as on "Leave The Biker," which finds the protagonist exhorting the object of his desire to dump her bad-boy beau in favor of his nerdish cool.

Long the critics' darlings for their mastery of the three-and-a-half-minute pop song, Schelsinger and co-songwriter/frontman Chris Collingwood have a knack for packing an album's worth of hooks into a single song before you even reach the first chorus.
But while Schlesinger has certainly proven that he can recreate the feel-good jingles of his pop forefathers (as he did so deliciously for the title track of the Tom Hanks film "That Thing You Do"), he is quick to point out that Fountains of Wayne is no novelty act.
Nerds or not, now that Fountains of Wayne have achieved that majorly overdue breakthrough single, Schlesinger and company have been able to balance their overflowing cup of acclaim with a little commercial success.
